How to Make a California DMV Appointment

· Verified against the California Driver's Handbook (DL 600, Revised June 2025)

California DMV offices are notoriously busy — wait times in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Diego can run 90+ minutes without an appointment, and 10–15 minutes with one. Booking online is free, takes about 5 minutes, and saves hours.

Three Types of Appointments

Step 1 — Book Online (Recommended)

  1. Go to dmv.ca.gov/portal/make-an-appointment
  2. Choose "Office Visit" or "Driving Test"
  3. Enter your ZIP code — the site shows offices within 50 miles with their next available dates
  4. Select an office and time slot
  5. Enter your name, date of birth, and email
  6. Receive a confirmation email with your appointment number — bring this to your visit
Tip: If your local office shows nothing for 4+ weeks, expand your radius and check smaller offices (e.g., Hawthorne, Inglewood, El Cajon). They often have openings within days while urban offices are booked out.

Step 2 — Cancel or Reschedule If Needed

Cancellations are free up to the appointment time. Reschedule online at the same URL or call 1-800-777-0133. Cancelling frees the slot — please don’t no-show. If you no-show twice in a row, the system may flag your account.

Step 3 — What to Bring

Depends on the appointment type, but for most office visits:

Walk-In vs Appointment

Walk-ins are accepted at all California DMV offices but are deprioritized — you wait until all appointments in your time block are served. In high-volume offices, this can mean 2–3 hours. In smaller offices, walk-in is sometimes faster than waiting two weeks for an appointment.

If No Slots Are Available

  1. Refresh daily — cancellations open up slots constantly. Mid-morning Tuesdays and Wednesdays tend to have the most last-minute availability.
  2. Check smaller offices within driving distance (Lancaster, Bakersfield satellite offices, Folsom near Sacramento).
  3. Call 1-800-777-0133 — sometimes phone agents have access to slots not on the website.
  4. Walk in early — many offices open at 8 a.m. and the first hour has the shortest queue.

Drive Test Appointments Specifically

The behind-the-wheel test must be scheduled separately, after you’ve held your permit at least 6 months and completed your 50 hours of supervised practice. Drive test slots fill up faster than office visit slots — book as soon as you’re eligible. Some offices have 6–8 week waits for drive test slots.

You’ll need to bring a vehicle that’s safe and properly registered, with valid insurance proof. The vehicle must have working seat belts, working mirrors, working lights, working brake lights, and tires in good condition. The examiner can refuse to test if the vehicle fails inspection.

FAQ

Can I book an appointment for someone else?

Yes. Use their name and date of birth. The person whose name is on the appointment must be the one taking the test or completing the transaction.

How early should I arrive?

15 minutes before your appointment. Arriving more than 30 minutes early often means waiting outside — most DMV offices won’t let you queue up early. Arriving more than 10 minutes late often means you forfeit your slot.

Is there a fee for the appointment itself?

No. The transaction fee (license renewal, REAL ID, etc.) is what you pay — booking is free.
