California is one of the few US states that publishes its driver handbook in multiple languages and offers the written test in 9 languages: English, Spanish (Español), Chinese (中文), Vietnamese (Tiếng Việt), Korean (한국어), Tagalog, Russian, Japanese, and Punjabi. The drive test is conducted in English; you may bring a translator only for specific limited situations approved by the DMV.

How the DMV Test in Other Languages Works
- Same content as English: Questions cover the same California Driver's Handbook material — only the language differs.
- Same passing standard: 83% (30/36 adults, 38/46 teens). Same 3 attempts.
- Request the language at booking: When making your DMV appointment, select your preferred language. You can also request at the counter when you arrive.
- Drive test is in English: The behind-the-wheel test instructions are spoken in English. The DMV does not normally provide drive test interpreters.
- Audio assistance available: If you have reading difficulty, the DMV offers audio versions of the written test in supported languages.
About These Resources
