Alabama Motorcycle Endorsement Guide

What a motorcycle endorsement is, who needs one, and how to add it to your Alabama driver license.

What Is a Motorcycle Endorsement?

Alabama does not add a separate motorcycle "endorsement" sticker to a regular license the way some states do. Instead, Alabama grants motorcycle authority as a license classification — Class M. The "Class M" designation must appear on your Alabama driver license for you to legally operate a motorcycle or motor-driven cycle.

A rider who already holds an Alabama driver license adds the Class M classification to it; a rider with no other license obtains a Class M license on its own.

How to Add the Endorsement — Steps

  1. Confirm your eligibility — age 16 for a motorcycle Class M license, or age 14-15 for a restricted motor-driven-cycle license (Restriction B).
  2. Study the Alabama Motorcycle Manual, which the knowledge test is based on.
  3. Visit an ALEA driver license examining office and pass the vision screening and the motorcycle knowledge test.
  4. Pass the on-cycle skill test, which checks basic vehicle control and crash-avoidance maneuvers.
  5. Pay the applicable fee; the Class M classification is then added to your Alabama license.

MSF Course Waiver

The Alabama Motorcycle Manual encourages every rider to take a formal hands-on training course, such as a Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) RiderCourse, even where the state does not require one — you learn how to improve your riding skills and mental strategies. Whether completing an approved course can waive any part of the Alabama motorcycle test is set by ALEA policy and can change, so confirm directly with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency before relying on a waiver.

Cost & Renewal

The fee for adding the Class M classification is set by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. Because Class M is part of your driver license rather than a separate credential, it renews together with your Alabama driver license — there is no separate motorcycle renewal cycle. Confirm current fee amounts with ALEA.
