Alabama Motorcycle Helmet Law

Who must wear a helmet in Alabama, the penalties for not wearing one, and the eye-protection rules every rider should know.

Universal Helmet Law

📋 The Current Law

Alabama law requires every operator and passenger of a motorcycle or motor-driven cycle to wear approved protective headgear. The requirement applies to all ages — this is known as a universal helmet law, and Alabama has had one for decades.

The same section of Alabama law that sets the helmet rule also requires riders to wear shoes and limits handlebar height to no more than 15 inches above the portion of the seat occupied by the operator.

🪖 Who Must Wear a Helmet

Alabama has a universal motorcycle helmet law. State law states that no person shall operate or ride upon a motorcycle or motor-driven cycle unless wearing approved protective headgear. There is no age exemption and no exception for experience or insurance — if you are on a motorcycle in Alabama, whether you are the operator or a passenger, you must wear a helmet.

Alabama law also requires that anyone operating or riding a motorcycle wear shoes, and it limits handlebar height to no more than 15 inches above the seat.

⚠️ Penalties

Riding without the required helmet in Alabama is a traffic violation. Because the helmet requirement is part of the state's motorcycle equipment law, a citation can bring a fine and may affect your driving record, and an operator can be cited for carrying an unhelmeted passenger. Confirm current fine amounts with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency or a local court.

👓 Eye Protection

Alabama law does not require motorcycle riders to wear eye or face protection. However, the state strongly encourages riders to use a plastic face shield attached to an approved helmet to protect the face and eyes from wind, dust, insects and debris thrown up by other vehicles. A face shield protects your whole face; goggles protect only the eyes, and a windshield is not a substitute for either. Treat eye protection as essential gear even though it is not legally mandated.

✅ DOT-Approved Helmet Standards

A legal motorcycle helmet must meet the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) FMVSS 218 standard. Look for the "DOT" certification label on the back. Helmets that meet stricter Snell or ECE standards offer additional protection. Avoid novelty helmets — they are not legal head protection.
