What a motorcycle endorsement is, who needs one, and how to add it to your Arkansas driver license.
In Arkansas, motorcycle authority is granted through a Class M license. A Class M license authorizes you to operate motorcycles, motor-driven cycles and similarly classified vehicles on public streets and highways.
Riders aged 14 to 15 may instead hold a Class MD license, which is limited to a motor-driven cycle displacing 250 cc or less. A Class MD license expires one month after the holder's 16th birthday, when the rider becomes eligible for a full Class M license.
| Endorsement | Motorcycle-Only License | |
|---|---|---|
| Who it's for | Drivers who already hold an Arkansas license | Riders without a regular driver license |
| Added to | Your existing license | Issued as its own license |
| Knowledge test | Motorcycle knowledge test | Motorcycle knowledge test |
| Lets you drive a car | Yes — keeps your car privileges | No — motorcycle only |
Arkansas allows the on-cycle skills test to be waived for riders who complete an approved Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) Basic RiderCourse. The range portion of the course ends with a skill evaluation; riders who meet the standard receive a completion card.
To use the waiver, present your Basic RiderCourse completion certificate within 90 days of finishing the class. The waiver covers the skills test only — you still must pass the written knowledge test.
The Arkansas Class M motorcycle license fee is $40.00. The license is valid for eight years.
You may renew a Class M license beginning 90 days before its expiration date. A Class MD license cannot be renewed as Class MD — the holder upgrades to a Class M license on or after their 16th birthday.
