How to walk into the DMV office prepared and pass the motorcycle knowledge test on your first attempt.
Days 1-2: read the California Motorcycle Handbook (DL 665) and this study guide. Days 3-5: take a practice test each day and review every missed question, focusing on SEE, lane positions, and braking. Days 6-7: take full 25-question practice tests until you comfortably score 20 or more correct.
Skim the cheat sheet, take two or three practice tests, and spend the rest of your time on your weakest topics. Remember: 20 of 25 correct (80%) to pass.
Two handbooks, two tests. California requires you to pass both the driver knowledge test and the motorcycle knowledge test, and the questions come from both handbooks.
The CMSP course is mandatory under 21. Riders under 21 cannot even get a motorcycle permit without first completing a California Motorcyclist Safety Program course.
The course waives only the skills test. A DL 389 certificate waives the DMV motorcycle skills test — never the written knowledge test.
Permit restrictions are strict. On a California motorcycle permit you may not carry passengers, ride on the freeway, or ride at night.
Source: Some test details are confirmed by the state agency; the rest reflect the consensus of major rider-education sources. The motorcycle knowledge test contains 25 questions; you must answer 20 correctly (80%) to pass.
