Colorado Motorcycle Test Tips

How to walk into the DMV office prepared and pass the motorcycle knowledge test on your first attempt.

🚫 Common Mistakes to Avoid

📅 Study Schedule

One-Week Plan

Days 1-2: read the Colorado Motorcycle Operator's Handbook (DR 2336) and this study guide. Days 3-5: take a practice test each day and review every missed question, focusing on SIPDE, lane position and braking. Days 6-7: take full practice tests until you score well past 20 of 25 comfortably.

One-Day Plan

Skim the cheat sheet, take two or three practice tests, and spend the rest of your time on your weakest topics. Remember: 20 of 25 correct (80%) to pass.

📍 Colorado Gotchas

Helmet under 18, eye protection for all. Colorado's helmet law covers only riders under 18, but eye protection is required of every operator and passenger at every age.

The course waives the skills test only. A Basic Rider Course can replace the on-cycle skills test — never the written knowledge test.

Front brake vs. trike rear brake. The front brake gives the most stopping power on a two-wheeler and a sidecar rig, but on a three-wheeler the rear brake gives the most power.

The handbook is a supplement. The Colorado Motorcycle Operator's Handbook supplements the Colorado Driver Handbook — you are still expected to know the general driving rules.

The motorcycle knowledge test consists of 25 questions; you must answer 20 correctly (80%) to pass. The question count is third-party consensus — the official DMV page does not publish it. An approved Basic Rider Course can waive the on-cycle skills test, but every applicant must still pass the written knowledge test.
