About the Connecticut Motorcycle Knowledge Test

The Connecticut motorcycle knowledge test is the written exam you must pass to earn your motorcycle permit or licence from the Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles. Score 12 of 16 correct (75%) to pass. Every question in this practice test is drawn from the official Connecticut Motorcycle Operator Manual, R-217 (Rev. 10-25) — the same source the real exam is built from.

The exam covers the core riding topics Connecticut expects every rider to know: motorcycle controls, protective gear and the helmet law, lane positioning, turning and swerving, braking, hazard awareness, riding on slippery surfaces, carrying passengers and cargo, the effects of alcohol, and handling emergencies on two wheels.

How to Use This Connecticut Practice Test

This simulator gives you exam-style questions five at a time, scores you instantly, and explains every answer with a reference back to the Connecticut motorcycle manual. To get the most out of it:

One Connecticut rule worth knowing before test day: Connecticut requires every motorcycle operator and passenger under 21 to wear approved protective headgear (effective October 1, 2025). All motorcycle learner's permit holders must wear approved headgear regardless of age. Licensed riders 21 and older may legally ride without a helmet.

Source: Some test details are confirmed by the state agency; the rest reflect the consensus of major rider-education sources. The Connecticut Motorcycle Operator Manual (R-217, Rev. 10-25) states the knowledge exam has 16 questions; 12 correct (75%) are needed to pass. The exam is given by appointment only at a full-service DMV branch office.
