Idaho Motorcycle Knowledge Test Cheat Sheet

The fastest way to review before your ITD motorcycle test — the numbers and rules most likely to appear.

🪪 Permit & Endorsement

  • Need a valid Idaho driver's license + an 'M' motorcycle endorsement
  • Pass the written knowledge test BEFORE applying for an instruction permit
  • Instruction permit is valid 180 days; renewable once without retesting
  • On a permit: daylight only, no freeway, no passengers
  • An approved rider training course waives the skills test (within 25 months)
  • Under 21? Knowledge test + an approved rider training course are required

🔢 Most-Tested Numbers

  • Following gap3 seconds minimum
  • At night / poor conditions4 seconds or more
  • Front brakeAt least 70% of stopping power
  • Permit valid180 days
  • Legally intoxicated (adult)0.08 BAC
  • Alcohol clears~1 drink per hour

🪖 Helmet & Gear

  • DOT helmet required for every rider UNDER 18 — on or off highway
  • Riders 18+ may legally ride without a helmet
  • Eye/face protection is recommended but NOT required by Idaho law
  • A helmet must meet U.S. DOT standards and fit snugly all around
  • A face shield gives the most protection; a windshield is no substitute
  • Don't wear tinted eye protection at night or in low light

✅ Remember This Answer

  • Quick stop? Both brakes fully, without locking either wheel
  • Front brake? Squeeze smoothly and firmly — never grab
  • Curve? Slow, Look, Roll, Press
  • To lean/turn? Press the handgrip toward the turn
  • Swerve? Brake before or after — never during
  • Mental strategy? SIPDE — Scan, Identify, Predict, Decide, Execute

✅ Remember This Answer (2)

  • Starts to rain? Ride in cars' tire tracks, not the center
  • Railroad tracks? Cross straight, within your lane
  • Tailgater behind you? Change lanes and let them pass
  • Cut reaction time? Cover the clutch and both brakes
  • Daytime visibility? Keep the headlight on
  • Being passed? Use the center or right of your lane

⚠️ Common Test Traps

  • "No room to stop" → Swerve — don't just brake harder
  • "Stop fastest" → Both brakes — front gives 70%+
  • "Brake while swerving" → Wrong — brake before or after only
  • "It starts to rain" → Slow down, ride in the tire tracks
  • "Lane splitting" → Not legal in Idaho
  • "Following distance" → 3 sec; 4+ at night or in poor conditions

⚠️ More Test Traps

  • "Curve too fast" → Slow BEFORE the turn — not hard mid-curve
  • "Front wheel locks" → Release the front brake immediately
  • "Rear wheel locks" → Release, reapply light-to-lighter
  • "Stuck throttle" → Engine cut-off switch + pull in the clutch
  • "Carrying a passenger" → Ride slower; the bike responds slower
  • "One drink" → Even one drink significantly affects riding

🚨 Emergency Situations

  • Front tire flat → Steering feels heavy; hold grips, coast, ease off
  • Rear tire flat → Back sways; ease off throttle, edge off the road
  • Stuck throttle → Engine cut-off switch + clutch in at the same time
  • Wobble → Ease off the throttle gradually — don't brake, don't accelerate
  • Engine seizes → Low on oil; squeeze the clutch, pull off the road
  • Obstacle you must cross → Hit it at 90°, slow, straight, rise onto the pegs

🌧️ Surfaces, Weather & Night

  • Pavement is most slippery when rain first starts
  • Slippery surface: slow before it, no sudden moves, both brakes gently
  • Cross parallel tracks or seams at 45° or more
  • Rain grooves cause a harmless wander — relax and ride straight across
  • Night: ride slower and open a 4-second-plus following gap
  • Night: high beam when not following or meeting a vehicle

🏍️ Motorcycle Control

  • Countersteer: press left grip → lean left → go left
  • Use both brakes every stop — the front gives 70%+ of the power
  • Corner in four steps: SLOW · LOOK · ROLL · PRESS
  • Slow tight turn: lean the bike only, keep your body straight
  • Change gears before you enter a turn
  • Remain in first gear while stopped so you can move out quickly

🍺 Alcohol & Impairment

  • Legally intoxicated (adult 21+)0.08 BAC
  • Under 210.02 BAC
  • Commercial vehicle0.04 BAC
  • As little as one drink significantly affects riding
  • Judgment is the first ability impaired by alcohol
  • No shortcut sobers you up — only time works

🎯 Last-Minute Before the Test

  • Both brakes to stop — front brake = 70%+ of the power
  • Every curve: SLOW · LOOK · ROLL · PRESS
  • Press the grip toward the turn to lean (countersteer)
  • Brake OR swerve — never both at once
  • Follow at 3 seconds — 4+ at night, wet, or heavy traffic
  • Helmet required under 18; lane splitting is illegal in Idaho
  • SIPDE = Scan, Identify, Predict, Decide, Execute · 0.08 BAC = intoxicated
