About the Illinois Motorcycle Knowledge Test

The Illinois motorcycle knowledge test is the written exam you must pass to earn your motorcycle permit or licence from the Illinois Secretary of State. Score 12 of 15 correct (80%) to pass. Every question in this practice test is drawn from the official Illinois Motorcycle Operator Manual (DSD X 140, July 2024) — the same source the real exam is built from.

The exam covers the core riding topics Illinois expects every rider to know: motorcycle controls, protective gear and the helmet law, lane positioning, turning and swerving, braking, hazard awareness, riding on slippery surfaces, carrying passengers and cargo, the effects of alcohol, and handling emergencies on two wheels.

How to Use This Illinois Practice Test

This simulator gives you exam-style questions five at a time, scores you instantly, and explains every answer with a reference back to the Illinois motorcycle manual. To get the most out of it:

One Illinois rule worth knowing before test day: Illinois does not require motorcycle riders or passengers of any age to wear a helmet. Eye protection — glasses, goggles, or a transparent windshield — is still required by Illinois law for both the driver and any passenger.

Source: Some test details are confirmed by the state agency; the rest reflect the consensus of major rider-education sources. The Illinois Motorcycle Operator Manual does not publish a question count or passing score; it includes only 4 sample knowledge questions. The 15-question, 12-to-pass (80%) figure shown here is the format used for the motorcycle endorsement supplement; a full Class M applicant may also take a general-knowledge test.
