How to walk into the DOV office prepared and pass the motorcycle knowledge test on your first attempt.
Days 1-2: read the Kansas Motorcycle Handbook and this study guide. Days 3-5: take a practice test each day and review every missed question, focusing on SEE, lane positioning and braking. Days 6-7: take full practice tests until you pass comfortably — aim for at least 80%.
Skim the cheat sheet, take two or three practice tests, and spend the rest of your time on your weakest topics. Remember the standard target: 80% to pass.
Eye protection is broader than the helmet law. A licensed adult may legally ride without a helmet, but every operator still needs approved eye protection unless the windscreen is at least 10 inches above the handlebar center.
The skills test can be done through a rider course. Under K.S.A. 8-240, an MSF-recognized rider course can satisfy the on-cycle driving examination.
Three-wheel testing limits your license. Pass the skills test on a three-wheeled motorcycle that is not an autocycle and your license is restricted to three-wheeled motorcycles.
The permit expires in one year. A Kansas Class C or M instructional permit must be renewed by retaking the written exam if it lapses.
Source: Test details reflect the consensus of major rider-education sources — confirm with the state agency before your visit. Kansas does not publish an official motorcycle knowledge-test count; 25 questions / 80% is a strong multi-site consensus. Every operator must wear approved eye protection unless the motorcycle has a windscreen at least 10 inches above the handlebar center.
