How to Get Your Kentucky Motorcycle Permit

What to do, what to bring, and what to expect at the KYTC office — start to finish.

Overview

A Kentucky motorcycle instruction permit lets you practice while you prepare for a motorcycle license or endorsement. To apply, you must already hold a valid motor vehicle operator's license, or be at least 18 years old. An applicant under 18 must have a parent or legal guardian sign for the permit.

The steps below follow the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet process. Kentucky does not publish an official motorcycle knowledge-test count or passing score online — practice tests use the widely cited 30-question / 80% format. Always confirm current fees, accepted documents and office locations at drive.ky.gov before you go.

Step-by-Step

1

Confirm you are eligible

You must possess a valid Kentucky operator's license, or be at least 18 years of age, to apply for a motorcycle instruction permit. An applicant under 18 must have a parent or legal guardian sign for the permit, even if a parent already signed the regular driver license application.

2

Study the Kentucky Motorcycle Manual

The motorcycle knowledge test is based on the Kentucky Motorcycle Manual. Study the riding strategies, the SEE process, braking and swerving, lane positioning, and Kentucky's helmet, eye-protection and licensing rules.

3

Apply in your county of residence

Make application in your county of residence. Kentucky processes driver licensing through Transportation Cabinet Driver Licensing offices — find your nearest location, current fees and accepted documents at drive.ky.gov.

4

Pass the vision and knowledge tests

Take the vision screening and the motorcycle knowledge test. The test covers the material in the Kentucky Motorcycle Manual; practice tests use a 30-question, 80%-to-pass format.

5

Receive your instruction permit and practice

Once you pass, you receive a motorcycle instruction permit. While on the permit you may not carry passengers. Use this time to build the skills the on-cycle test measures — slow tight turns, quick stops with both brakes, swerving, and smooth clutch and throttle control.

6

Earn your motorcycle license or endorsement

Pass the on-cycle skills test to receive a motorcycle license or a motorcycle endorsement on your operator's license. Alternatively, completing an approved motorcycle rider training course that includes a similar test of skill exempts you from the licensing skills test.
