About the Maine Motorcycle Knowledge Test

The Maine motorcycle knowledge test is the written exam you must pass to earn your motorcycle permit or licence from the Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Score 20 of 25 correct (80%) to pass. Every question in this practice test is drawn from the official Maine Motorcycle Operator Manual — the same source the real exam is built from.

The exam covers the core riding topics Maine expects every rider to know: motorcycle controls, protective gear and the helmet law, lane positioning, turning and swerving, braking, hazard awareness, riding on slippery surfaces, carrying passengers and cargo, the effects of alcohol, and handling emergencies on two wheels.

How to Use This Maine Practice Test

This simulator gives you exam-style questions five at a time, scores you instantly, and explains every answer with a reference back to the Maine motorcycle manual. To get the most out of it:

One Maine rule worth knowing before test day: Maine requires a helmet for operators and passengers under 18, learner's-permit holders, and operators (and their passengers) within the first year after passing the licensing tests. Other adult riders may ride without one.

Source: Test details reflect the consensus of major rider-education sources — confirm with the state agency before your visit. Maine adopts the standardized MSF Motorcycle Operator Manual (16th Edition). The BMV does not publish a motorcycle-specific knowledge-test count; 25 questions / 80% is the third-party practice consensus. An approved motorcycle rider education course is required for everyone, of any age, before a permit, license or endorsement is issued, and completing it waives the BMV written and road tests. Maine law does not require eye protection, though the manual strongly advises it.
