What to do, what to bring, and what to expect at the SOS office — start to finish.
A Michigan motorcycle temporary instruction permit (TIP) lets you practice riding on public roads while you prepare for the rider skills test and your CY endorsement. The Michigan Motorcycle Operator Manual is a supplement to 'What Every Driver Must Know,' so the knowledge test also covers the rules of the road from the regular handbook.
The steps below follow the official Secretary of State motorcycle endorsement process. Always confirm current fees and requirements at Michigan.gov/SOS before you go.
You must hold a valid Michigan driver's license and be at least 16. If you are under 18, a parent or legal guardian must sign your application.
You can complete an approved motorcycle rider education course, which waives both the knowledge and skills tests, or you can test on your own through the Driver Testing Program. Find courses and testing businesses at Michigan.gov/Motorcycling.
At a Secretary of State office, pass the vision test and the written motorcycle knowledge test. Its questions come from the Michigan Motorcycle Operator Manual and the rules of the road in 'What Every Driver Must Know.'
Pay the TIP fee and receive a temporary instruction permit valid for 180 days. While riding, carry the permit, ride only in daylight, carry no passengers, and stay under the constant visual supervision of a licensed motorcycle operator at least 18 years old. Only two TIPs are issued in a 10-year period.
Schedule the skills test with a driver testing business approved by the department. You must bring a legally equipped, registered motorcycle and wear a DOT-approved helmet. The test can be attempted only twice; fail twice and you must pass an MSF Basic Rider Course.
The testing business uploads your results to the Secretary of State. Visit an office (or use online/self-service if eligible), pay the motorcycle endorsement fee, and the CY endorsement is added to your license.
Check the official SOS page for current fees and accepted forms of payment.

May 2024) does not publish a question count or passing score. 20 questions / 16 to pass (80%) is the strong multi-site practice consensus and was confirmed by the site owner for the displayed format.
