How to walk into the MVD office prepared and pass the motorcycle knowledge test on your first attempt.
Days 1-2: read the Montana Motorcycle Supplement and this study guide. Days 3-5: take a practice test each day and review every missed question, focusing on hazard awareness, lane positioning and braking. Days 6-7: take full practice tests until you pass comfortably and consistently.
Skim the cheat sheet, take two or three practice tests, and spend the rest of your time on your weakest topics. Remember: about 25 questions, and roughly 20 correct (80%) to pass.
Helmets are required only under 18. Riders 18 and older may ride without one in Montana (MCA 61-9-417), but the manual still strongly recommends a helmet for everyone.
Your headlight must be on at all times. Montana requires the headlamp to be illuminated whenever you ride, day or night.
The question count is not official. The MVD does not publish the number of questions, so treat "about 25 questions, 80% to pass" as a guide and confirm at your exam station.
There is more than a written test. The exam has five parts, including a road test, and you must bring your own registered motorcycle for it.
Source: Test details reflect the consensus of major rider-education sources — confirm with the state agency before your visit. The Montana written test is based on the Montana Motorcycle Supplement (Revised 12/15) — the MSF Motorcycle Operator Manual plus a Montana licensing/equipment section. The MVD does not publish a question count or passing score; about 25 questions with an 80% passing score (20 correct) is the multi-site consensus — confirm with the Montana MVD. Helmet age is set by statute (MCA 61-9-417), not the manual.
