Nebraska Motorcycle Endorsement Guide

What a motorcycle endorsement is, who needs one, and how to add it to your Nebraska driver license.

What Is a Motorcycle Endorsement?

In Nebraska, motorcycle authority can take the form of a motorcycle license, a motorcycle permit, or a motorcycle endorsement added to your existing driver's license — all of which make it legal to ride on public roads (Nebraska Motorcycle Laws).

A Class M license authorizes you to operate a motorcycle or a three-wheeled motor vehicle. If you test on a motor scooter or three-wheeler, a 'Z' restriction limits you to that type.

How to Add the Endorsement — Steps

  1. Hold or apply for a Nebraska driver's license, and apply at a Nebraska DMV/driver licensing office.
  2. Study the Nebraska Motorcycle Manual and pass the vision screening and the motorcycle knowledge test (80%).
  3. Pass the on-cycle skills (drive) test — the written test must be passed first — or complete an approved motorcycle safety course.
  4. Receive your Class M license or motorcycle endorsement.

MSF Course Waiver

Completing a Nebraska-approved motorcycle safety course — the MSF Basic RiderCourse (at least 18 hours: a 3-hour e-course, 5+ hours of classroom, and 10+ hours of range riding) — lets the DMV examiner waive BOTH the written and the drive test.

The waiver applies when you apply for your motorcycle license within 24 months of completing the course, and graduates may also qualify for lower insurance rates. Find approved providers on dmv.nebraska.gov.

Cost & Renewal

The motorcycle privilege is part of your Nebraska driver's license. A five-year license costs $29 ($24 plus a $5 security fee); shorter terms cost less, and a replacement is $16.

The endorsement renews together with your driver's license — there is no separate motorcycle renewal cycle. Confirm current fees on dmv.nebraska.gov before you apply.
