✅ Remember This Answer
- Quick stop? Both brakes; squeeze the front steadily
- Front brake? About three-quarters of stopping power
- To turn? Push the handgrip toward the turn
- Through a turn? Maintain speed or accelerate gradually
- Strategy? SIPDE — Scan, Identify, Predict, Decide, Execute
- Swerve? Swerve first, then brake — never both at once
✅ Remember This Answer (2)
- Front wheel locks? Release the lever to regain traction
- Rear wheel locks? Keep it locked until you stop
- Small animal in your lane? Stay in your lane — don't swerve out
- Following distance? At least 2 seconds, more if poor
- Daytime visibility? Keep the headlight on
- Where do crashes happen? Intersections most of all
⚠️ Common Test Traps
- "Stop fastest" → Both brakes — not front alone, not rear first
- "Brake while swerving" → Wrong — swerve, then brake
- "Decelerate in a turn" → No — maintain or accelerate gradually
- "Made eye contact" → Driver still may not see you
- "SEE system" → New Jersey teaches SIPDE, not SEE
- "Ride alongside another bike" → Never — no escape room
⚠️ More Test Traps
- "Curve too fast" → Set entry speed before the curve
- "Front tire flat" → Steering feels heavy — ease off, edge off
- "Stuck throttle" → Use the engine cut-off switch
- "Low-speed motorcycle" → Auto license OK, no helmet required
- "Test bike 231cc or less" → License is restricted
- "Talk in a group" → Only when stopped
🚨 Emergency Situations
- Tire goes flat → Hold grips, ease off throttle, keep straight, edge off
- Front wheel locks → Release the front lever
- Rear wheel locks → Keep it locked until stopped
- Wobble → Grip firmly, ease off the throttle — don't accelerate
- Object you must cross → Slow, cross straight, rise off the seat
- Stuck throttle → Engine cut-off switch + clutch
🌧️ Surfaces, Weather & Night
- Slippery surface: slow, no sudden moves, stay upright
- Cross metal gratings straight, at a steady speed
- Avoid slick painted lines and the oily center when wet
- Night: slow down and open up your distance
- Night: high beam when not following or meeting traffic
- You see less of the road at night — keep stopping within your sight
🏍️ Motorcycle Control
- Countersteer: push the right grip → lean right → go right
- Both brakes every stop — front gives about ¾ of the power
- Maintain speed or accelerate gradually through a turn
- Three travel paths per lane — ride where you're most seen
- Keep wrists low so you don't over-apply the throttle
- If you see their mirror, the driver can see you
🍺 Alcohol & Impairment
- BAC limit (NJ law)0.08%
- Alcohol, drugs & fatigue keep you from riding in shape
- Don't ride after impairing meds until the effect wears off
- Resume slowly and keep extra distance afterward
- Riding is more tiring than driving — take rest breaks
- The safe choice is not to drink and ride
🎯 Last-Minute Before the Test
- 50 questions — 40 correct (80%) to pass
- Both brakes to stop — front = about ¾ of the power
- Push the grip toward the turn; maintain or accelerate
- Swerve OR brake — never both at once
- Follow at 2 seconds; keep the headlight on always
- SIPDE = Scan, Identify, Predict, Decide, Execute
- Universal helmet law · permit practice 20 days · road test >231cc = unrestricted

Source: Test details reflect the consensus of major rider-education sources — confirm with the state agency before your visit. New Jersey's 50-question test is unusually long (40 of 50 to pass). 50q/80% has a very strong multi-site consensus; the MVC does not publish the count. NJ uses its own manual (Chapter 10 of the NJ Driver Manual), so the strategy is SIPDE (not SEE), and licensing facts come from the manual + nj.gov.
