About the North Dakota Motorcycle Knowledge Test

The North Dakota motorcycle knowledge test is the written exam you must pass to earn your motorcycle permit or licence from the North Dakota Department of Transportation. Score 20 of 25 correct (80%) to pass. Every question in this practice test is drawn from the official North Dakota Motorcycle Operator Manual (Class M) — the same source the real exam is built from.

The exam covers the core riding topics North Dakota expects every rider to know: motorcycle controls, protective gear and the helmet law, lane positioning, turning and swerving, braking, hazard awareness, riding on slippery surfaces, carrying passengers and cargo, the effects of alcohol, and handling emergencies on two wheels.

How to Use This North Dakota Practice Test

This simulator gives you exam-style questions five at a time, scores you instantly, and explains every answer with a reference back to the North Dakota motorcycle manual. To get the most out of it:

One North Dakota rule worth knowing before test day: North Dakota requires a DOT-standard helmet for every operator and passenger under 18. Riders 18 and older may ride without one - but if the operator must wear a helmet, every passenger must too, regardless of age.

Source: Test details reflect the consensus of major rider-education sources — confirm with the state agency before your visit. 25 questions / 80% is a strong multi-site consensus; NDDOT does not publish an official count. The 2025-2027 manual teaches a THREE-second following distance (4+ in poor conditions) and a front brake supplying about 70% of stopping power. Partial helmet law (under 18). DUI 0.08% adult / 0.02% under 21.
