What to do, what to bring, and what to expect at the BMV office — start to finish.
An Ohio motorcycle permit is a Temporary Instruction Permit Identification Card (TIPIC). You earn it by passing the motorcycle knowledge test, and it lets you practice riding under restrictions while you prepare for the on-cycle skills test or a Motorcycle Ohio course.
The steps below follow the official Ohio BMV and Motorcycle Ohio process. Always confirm current fees and accepted documents on bmv.ohio.gov before you go.
All 40 knowledge-test questions come from the manual. Pick up a copy of the manual and the Digest of Ohio Motor Vehicle Laws, and use this study guide and the practice test to prepare.
Take the motorcycle knowledge test at a driver exam station (or certain Deputy Registrars). It has 40 questions and you must score 75% — 30 correct — to pass.
After you pass, proceed to a Deputy Registrar to obtain your Temporary Instruction Permit Identification Card (TIPIC). It is valid one year from the issue date.
On a TIPIC you may ride only during daylight hours, may not carry passengers, and may not ride on congested roads or interstate highways. You must wear an approved helmet and eye protection whenever you ride.
Riders under 18 must complete the Motorcycle Ohio Basic Course and meet Graduated Driver Licensing requirements. Riders 18+ may either complete an approved course or schedule the state on-cycle skills test. The course provides motorcycles, helmets and workbooks.
There is no fee for the on-cycle skills test — bring your TIPIC and a street-legal motorcycle, and wear a helmet and eye protection. Or present a Motorcycle Ohio completion card (within 60 days) to waive the skills test. Then bring your TIPIC to a Deputy Registrar to receive your endorsement or motorcycle-only license.
