How to walk into the DPS office prepared and pass the motorcycle knowledge test on your first attempt.
Days 1-2: read the Motorcycle Operator Manual and this study guide. Days 3-5: take a practice test each day and review every missed question, focusing on SEE, lane position and braking. Days 6-7: take full practice tests until you score 80% (20 of 25) comfortably.
Skim the cheat sheet, take two or three practice tests, and spend the rest of your time on your weakest topics. Remember: 20 of 25 correct (80%) to pass.
Eye protection beats the helmet rule. South Dakota requires eye protection for all riders (unless a windshield) even though a helmet is required only under 18.
Daylight-only permit. A motorcycle instruction permit allows riding only between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m., always under supervision.
The course is a shortcut. A state-approved Basic Rider Course waives BOTH the written and riding tests — not just the skills test.
Passengers need their own endorsement. Carrying a passenger requires the motorcycle passenger endorsement, and a sidecar or trike needs the sidecar/trike endorsement.
Source: Some test details are confirmed by the state agency; the rest reflect the consensus of major rider-education sources. dps.sd.gov states the written test must be passed at 80% or higher; the 25-question count is the third-party consensus. The manual is the standardized MSF Motorcycle Operator Manual, 18th Edition (June 2020), with a South Dakota DPS front section (Revised October 2020).
