About the Texas Motorcycle Knowledge Test

The Texas motorcycle knowledge test is the written exam you must pass to earn your motorcycle permit or licence from the Texas Department of Public Safety. Score 16 of 20 correct (80%) to pass. Every question in this practice test is drawn from the official Texas Motorcycle Operator Training Manual (2020-2021) — the same source the real exam is built from.

The exam covers the core riding topics Texas expects every rider to know: motorcycle controls, protective gear and the helmet law, lane positioning, turning and swerving, braking, hazard awareness, riding on slippery surfaces, carrying passengers and cargo, the effects of alcohol, and handling emergencies on two wheels.

How to Use This Texas Practice Test

This simulator gives you exam-style questions five at a time, scores you instantly, and explains every answer with a reference back to the Texas motorcycle manual. To get the most out of it:

One Texas rule worth knowing before test day: Texas requires riders under 21 to wear a helmet. Riders 21 or older may ride without one if they complete a safety course or carry qualifying medical insurance.

Source: Test details reflect the consensus of major rider-education sources — confirm with the state agency before your visit. Majority third-party consensus is 20 questions / 80%. Texas is unusual: a TDLR-approved Motorcycle Operator Training Course is required of every applicant, and completing it waives the Class M knowledge (written) test. The written test is required by statute only for applicants restricted to operating a moped.
