Utah Motorcycle Knowledge Test Cheat Sheet

The fastest way to review before your DLD motorcycle test — the numbers and rules most likely to appear.

🪪 Permit & Endorsement

  • Need a driver license PLUS a motorcycle endorsement
  • Learner permit: age 16+, hold a Class D or CDL, valid 6 months
  • First 2 months: no passengers, no 60+ mph road, no 10 PM–6 AM
  • Under 19 must hold the permit 2 months (BRC waives it)
  • Tiered: the bike's size at the skills test sets your limit
  • Test on 650cc or larger = no restriction

🔢 Most-Tested Numbers

  • Following gap2 seconds minimum
  • Wet / heavy traffic3 seconds or more
  • Front brake70%+ of stopping power
  • Search ahead12 seconds
  • Adult BAC limit0.05% (Utah only)
  • Alcohol clears~1 drink per hour

🪖 Helmet & Gear

  • Helmet required — operators & passengers under 21
  • Riders 21+ may legally ride without a helmet
  • Helmet must meet US DOT standards
  • Eye protection NOT required by Utah law (recommended)
  • A faceshield protects your whole face; goggles only the eyes
  • Never wear tinted eye protection at night

✅ Remember This Answer

  • Quick stop? Use both brakes together
  • Front brake? Squeeze firmly — never grab
  • Curve? Slow, Look, Press, Roll
  • To lean/turn? Press the handgrip toward the turn
  • Swerve? Brake before or after — never during
  • Pre-ride check? T-CLOCS, before every ride

✅ Remember This Answer (2)

  • Starts to rain? Ride in cars' tire tracks, not the center
  • Railroad tracks? Cross straight, within your lane
  • Tailgater behind you? Let them pass
  • Cut reaction time? Cover the clutch and both brakes
  • Daytime visibility? Headlight on — 2× as likely to be seen
  • Where do crashes happen? Intersections, and short trips

⚠️ Common Test Traps

  • "No room to stop" → Swerve — don't just brake harder
  • "Stop fastest" → Both brakes — not front alone, not rear first
  • "Brake while swerving" → Wrong — brake before or after only
  • "It starts to rain" → Slow down, ride in the tire tracks
  • "Following distance" → 2 sec; 3+ in poor conditions
  • "Made eye contact" → Driver still may not yield

⚠️ More Test Traps

  • "Curve ahead, too fast" → Slow before — don't brake hard mid-curve
  • "Lane sharing" → Each vehicle needs a full lane
  • "Chased by a dog" → Approach slowly, then accelerate away
  • "Carrying a passenger" → Bike responds slower — ride slower
  • "Front wheel locks" → Release the front brake, then reapply
  • "Wobble" → Close throttle gradually — never accelerate out

🚨 Emergency Situations

  • Stuck throttle → Twist it; if still stuck, kill switch + pull in clutch
  • Wobble → Grip firmly, close throttle gradually; don't brake
  • Front wheel locks → Release the front brake, then reapply
  • Rear wheel locks → Keep it locked until stopped if straight & upright
  • Engine seizes / chain breaks → Squeeze the clutch, pull off the road
  • Obstacle you must cross → Hit it near 90°, rise onto the pegs

🛣️ Utah Road Rules

  • Lane splitting (between moving lanes) is unlawful
  • Lane filtering OK: ≤45 mph road, stopped traffic, ≤15 mph
  • Dead red light: stop, wait 90+ sec, then go if clear
  • Signal at least 2 seconds before turning
  • Motorcycles may use HOV lanes; max two abreast per lane
  • No state safety inspection required (since 2018)

🏍️ Motorcycle Control

  • Countersteer: press left grip → lean left → go left
  • Use both brakes every stop — the front gives 70%+ of power
  • Corner in four steps: SLOW · LOOK · PRESS · ROLL
  • Slow tight turn: lean the bike only, keep your body upright
  • Pick the lane third that helps you see and be seen
  • Head-check your blind spot before every lane change

🍺 Alcohol & Impairment

  • Adult legally impaired0.05% BAC (Utah only)
  • Under 21Not-a-Drop — essentially zero
  • Alcohol clears~1 drink per hour
  • BAC depends onamount, speed, body weight
  • As little as one drink hurts judgment and balance
  • Cannabis impairs riding even where it is legal

🎯 Last-Minute Before the Test

  • Both brakes to stop — front brake = 70%+ of power
  • Every curve: SLOW · LOOK · PRESS · ROLL
  • Press the grip toward the turn to lean (countersteer)
  • Brake OR swerve — never both at once
  • Follow at 2 seconds — 3+ when wet or crowded
  • Helmet under 21; 25 questions, 20 to pass (80%)
  • SEE = Search, Evaluate, Execute · 0.05% BAC = impaired
