How to walk into the DMV office prepared and pass the motorcycle knowledge test on your first attempt.
Days 1-2: read the Virginia Motorcycle Operator Manual and this study guide. Days 3-5: take a practice test each day and review every missed question, focusing on SIPDE, lane positions, braking and the 3-second following rule. Days 6-7: take full practice tests until you pass comfortably (20 of 25 correct).
Skim the cheat sheet, take two or three practice tests, and spend the rest of your time on your weakest topics. Remember: 20 of 25 correct (80%) to pass, and the turning steps are Slow, Look, Lean, Roll.
SIPDE, not SEE. Virginia's manual uses Scan, Identify, Predict, Decide, Execute as its hazard-handling strategy.
Three-second following distance. Virginia teaches a 3-second minimum (4 seconds in rain or when you cannot see past the vehicle ahead), not the 2-second rule of some states.
Permit hours and no passengers. A learner's-permit rider may operate only after 4 a.m. and before midnight, must wear a helmet, must be supervised, and may carry no passenger.
Fail the skills test twice. Two failures of the DMV road skills test force you to complete a Virginia Rider Training Program before the designation is added.
