How to walk into the DMV office prepared and pass the motorcycle knowledge test on your first attempt.
Days 1-2: read the West Virginia Motorcycle Operator Manual and this study guide, paying attention to the helmet, eye-protection, permit and headlight rules. Days 3-5: take a practice test each day and review every missed question, focusing on SEE, lane positions and braking. Days 6-7: take full practice tests until you pass comfortably above 76%.
Skim the cheat sheet, take two or three practice tests, and spend the rest of your time on your weakest topics and West Virginia's specific rules. Remember: 19 of 25 (76%) to pass.
Universal helmet AND eye protection. Every operator and passenger must wear an approved helmet and shatter-resistant eye protection, at every age — and a windshield does not excuse the eyewear.
The permit doesn't renew. It is valid 180 days and cannot be renewed, so plan your skills test before it expires.
Seven-day wait, then the skills test. You must hold the permit at least seven days before taking the on-cycle skills test.
The Basic RiderCourse waives the skills test. Complete an approved WV Motorcycle Safety Program course (with your permit) and your completion card waives the DMV skills test.
Source: Test details reflect the consensus of major rider-education sources — confirm with the state agency before your visit. The pass standard is widely reported as 19 of 25 (76%) — unusually, not the common 80%; West Virginia publishes no official count, so this is third-party consensus. A rider must hold the instruction permit at least 7 days before the on-cycle skills test. Universal helmet law, and eye protection is required for every rider even if the motorcycle has a windshield.
