Texas Online License Renewal Guide 2026
If your Texas driver license is up for renewal, you may not need to visit a Driver License Office. The DL-7 lists the online renewal portal directly. This guide explains who's eligible per dps.texas.gov, who must still appear in person, and the practical steps to renew online.
What DL-7 Says About Online Renewal (Chapter 1)
DL-7 Chapter 1 says: "You may be eligible to renew online at https://txapps.texas.gov/tolapp/txdl/, by mail, or by phone at 1-866-DL-RENEW. To check your eligibility to renew, visit us online or call the number provided."
Two things from this:
- The portal exists — DL-7 lists it directly
- Eligibility is determined when you check at the portal — DL-7 doesn't list every eligibility rule
Who Must Renew In Person (DL-7 Chapter 1)
DL-7 Chapter 1 lists groups required to renew in person. Eligibility for online renewal is checked at the portal, but in general, in-person renewal is required for:
- Drivers age 79 or older (DL-7 Chapter 1)
- Drivers whose license has been expired for over 2 years (DL-7 Chapter 1)
- Commercial driver license (CDL) holders (DL-7 Chapter 1)
- Holders of an occupational license, provisional license, or learner license (DL-7 Chapter 1)
- Drivers due for the 16-year vision-and-photo update (DL-7 Chapter 1)
The 16-Year In-Person Vision/Photo Rule (DL-7 Chapter 1)
DL-7 Chapter 1 specifies: "A person must appear in a driver license office at least once every sixteen (16) years for a vision exam and to update the photo." So even if you'd otherwise be eligible to renew online, you'll need an in-person visit at least once every 16 years.
How to Renew Online — Step by Step
Per dps.texas.gov, the typical online renewal flow is:
- Go to https://txapps.texas.gov/tolapp/txdl/ (the portal listed in DL-7)
- Provide your driver license information for eligibility check
- Confirm your current address (or update if it has changed)
- Confirm or update emergency contacts and other voluntary info
- Pay the renewal fee — DL-7 fee table: $33 for adults 18 to 84 (8-year license)
- Receive a confirmation
- The new plastic license arrives by mail (timing per dps.texas.gov)
What You'll Need
- Your current Texas driver license
- Your Social Security Number (for verification)
- A credit or debit card for the fee
- Your current Texas address
Fees
Per the DL-7 Chapter 1 fee table:
By Mail or Phone
DL-7 Chapter 1 also lists "by mail, or by phone at 1-866-DL-RENEW" as alternatives to online renewal. The eligibility rules are the same. Mail-in renewal requires a paper form available from dps.texas.gov.
What If the Portal Says You're Ineligible?
The portal will redirect you to the in-person renewal flow. Common reasons for ineligibility:
- You're due for the 16-year vision/photo (DL-7 Chapter 1)
- You're 79 or older (DL-7 Chapter 1)
- Your license has been expired more than 2 years (DL-7 Chapter 1)
- You hold a CDL, occupational license, provisional license, or learner license (DL-7 Chapter 1)
- You're upgrading to REAL ID for the first time (per dps.texas.gov)
In any of these cases, see our DPS appointment guide for in-person scheduling.
What's NOT in the Online Portal
Per dps.texas.gov, the online renewal portal cannot:
- Issue a first-time driver license (DL-7 Chapter 1: "An application for a driver license must be made in person")
- Upgrade to REAL ID for the first time
- Add or remove license restrictions (DL-7 Chapter 1)
- Process out-of-state license transfers (DL-7 Chapter 1)
- Reinstate a suspended license (DL-7 Chapter 1)
If Your Address Has Changed
DL-7 Chapter 1 references address-change requirements. You'll typically use the same online portal listed in DL-7 to update your address — confirm at dps.texas.gov.
Replacement Licenses
If your license is lost, stolen, or damaged, the DL-7 fee table lists $11 for a replacement. Replacement service is available online for many cardholders — confirm eligibility at the portal.
