Indiana BMV Written Test — Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about the Indiana knowledge exam before you go.

How many questions are on the Indiana BMV knowledge test?

The test has 50 questions split into two scored sections: 34 general knowledge questions and 16 road sign identification questions. You must pass both sections independently.

What is the passing score?

You need 80% on each section — that means at least 28/34 on general knowledge and 13/16 on road signs. Your overall score doesn't matter; each section must meet the 80% threshold independently.

What happens if I fail?

You must wait until the next business day to retake the test. There's no limit on attempts, but you'll need to pay the testing fee again. If you fail the driving skills test, you must wait 7 days.

Is the test timed?

No, the real Indiana BMV test has no time limit. Take your time and read carefully. Our practice exam uses a 30-minute timer to simulate slight pressure, but the real test lets you go at your own pace.

How old do I need to be for a learner's permit?

Age 15 with enrollment in a driver's education course, or age 16 without driver's education. You must hold the permit for at least 180 days (6 months) before applying for a license.

What documents do I need to bring?

For a first-time permit or license, bring:

Does Indiana use "DUI" or "OWI"?

Indiana uses OWI — Operating While Intoxicated. The test will use OWI terminology, not DUI. Key numbers: 0.08% BAC limit (21+), 0.02% BAC (under 21), 0.15%+ triggers enhanced penalties. Refusing a chemical test = automatic 1-year license suspension.

Is cannabis legal in Indiana?

No. Unlike neighboring Illinois and Michigan, Indiana has not legalized recreational or medical marijuana. Any amount of cannabis while driving results in an OWI charge. This comes up on the test.

How many hours of practice driving do I need?

50 hours of supervised behind-the-wheel driving, including at least 10 hours at night. Your supervisor must be at least 25 years old (or a spouse who is at least 21).

What's the probationary license curfew?

During the first 180 days: 10 PM to 5 AM every night. After 180 days (under 18): Sun–Thu 11 PM; Sat–Sun 1 AM to 5 AM. Exceptions include lawful employment, school-sanctioned activities, and religious events. The probationary license lasts until you turn 21.
