Before You Study
1. Understand the test format. Iowa has one knowledge test: 25 multiple-choice questions, need 20 correct (80%) to pass. Road signs ARE included in the 25 questions โ there is no separate signs test.
2. Get the official manual. Download the Iowa Driver's License Manual from iowadot.gov. Every test question comes from this manual. It's free.
3. Know what's tested most. The heaviest topics are: road signs (shapes and colors), right-of-way rules, OWI/alcohol laws, school bus stopping rules, and speed limits. Focus your study time here first.
While Studying
4. Memorize the key numbers. Iowa tests love specific numbers: 0.08% BAC (21+), 0.02% (under 21), 70 mph rural interstate, 55 mph urban interstate, 25 mph residential, 100 ft signal (โค45 mph), 300 ft signal (>45 mph), 5 ft hydrant, 10 ft stop sign, 50 ft railroad, 15 ft school bus, 12-month permit hold, 20 supervised hours, 72-hr crash report, $1,500 damage threshold. Write these on flashcards.
5. Learn sign shapes before colors. Each sign shape has exactly one meaning (octagon = STOP, triangle = YIELD, diamond = warning, pentagon = school). If you know shapes, you can answer even if you can't remember the exact sign.
6. Know OWI, not DUI. Iowa uses "OWI" (Operating While Intoxicated), not "DUI." The test will use OWI terminology. Know the 0.08% limit for 21+, 0.02% for under 21, and that refusing a breathalyzer means automatic 1-year revocation + minimum $1,250 fine. OWI also applies to any controlled substance.
7. Take practice tests โ a lot of them. Score 90%+ consistently on practice exams before going to the DMV. Aim higher than the 80% minimum so you have margin for nerves.
Key Rules to Memorize
8. School bus rule โ know the exception. On roads with 3 lanes or fewer: ALL vehicles in both directions must stop. On roads with 4 or more lanes: only vehicles approaching from the rear must stop โ opposite-direction traffic does not need to stop. Stop no closer than 15 feet. This is the only Iowa exception.
9. Iowa hands-free law โ all drivers. Iowa does have a statewide hands-free law. All drivers: no holding your phone while driving. Under-18 permit/intermediate holders: no calls at all while moving (unless vehicle is completely stopped off the roadway). Voice activation is permitted for all licensed drivers.
10. Recreational cannabis is illegal in Iowa. Iowa has a limited medical cannabidiol program for registered patients, but recreational marijuana remains a criminal offense. Driving under the influence of any controlled substance is an OWI offense with the same penalties as drunk driving.
11. Signal before turning. Iowa requires signaling at least 100 feet before a turn when the speed limit is 45 mph or less, and at least 300 feet when the speed limit exceeds 45 mph. Signal early โ this is a frequent test question.
Test Day Strategies
12. The safest answer is usually correct. When two options seem right, pick the more cautious one โ slow down, yield, stop, check mirrors. Iowa rewards defensive driving answers.
13. Watch for "All of the above." On Iowa DOT tests, "All of the above" is correct more often than you'd expect โ especially for OWI penalties, suspension triggers, and violation questions.
14. Read every word carefully. Test questions hinge on words like "3 lanes or fewer" vs. "4 or more lanes" (school bus), "intermediate" vs. "full" license, or "first offense" vs. "second offense." One word changes the answer.
15. Don't rush. Iowa's knowledge test has no time limit. You need 20 out of 25 correct (80%). You can miss up to 5 and still pass โ so stay calm and read carefully.
