How to Pass the Kansas KDOR Written Test

The knowledge test has a significant failure rate. Here's exactly what to study and how to walk in prepared.

๐Ÿ“‹ Know the Test Format

The Kansas KDOR knowledge test is 25 questions. You must answer at least 20 correctly (80%) to pass โ€” meaning you can miss up to 5. There is no official time limit. The test can be taken at any Full-Service Driver License Center or online at ks.knowtodrive.com (p.94).

You have 4 attempts to pass the test. Each retake requires a $1.50 re-exam fee and must wait until the next working day. If you fail the 4th time, you must wait a minimum of 6 months from the most recent failed exam before retesting (p.14).

Tests are taken at any Kansas exam station. As of the current manual, you must schedule an appointment online at www.ksrevenue.gov or by phone at 785-296-3671.

๐ŸŽฏ Top 10 Most-Missed Topics

1

DUI & BAC Limits

BAC 0.08%+ (drivers 21+) = DUI violation. Under 21: can be arrested at 0.02% (Zero Tolerance โ€” p.23). 1st conviction: fine $750โ€“$1,000 + min 48 hrs jail or 100 hrs community service + license suspended + ignition interlock required (p.23โ€“24). BAC 0.08%+ may trigger 30-day suspension. Test refusal: 1-yr suspension (1st), 2 yrs (2nd), 3 yrs (3rd), 10 yrs (4th), permanent (5th) (p.14โ€“15).

2

Loss of Driving Privileges

Your license may be suspended for: conviction of 3 moving violations within 12 months (K.S.A. 8-255); refusing a chemical test; failing to maintain insurance; failing to appear in court; or driving under the influence (p.14). License may be revoked for vehicular homicide, reckless driving, attempting to elude police, or a 5th DUI/refusal = permanent revocation (p.14โ€“15).

3

GDL Permit Rules

Instruction Permit at age 14. Hold permit for 1 year before Restricted License (if under 17, p.12). Restricted License at 15 (25 hrs + driver's ed) or 16 (50 hrs, 10 at night). Age 16โ€“17: drive freely 5 AMโ€“9 PM; also to/from school, religious, and work at any time. Max 1 non-sibling minor passenger. All restrictions removed at 16 after 6 months. Unrestricted Class C at 17 (p.11โ€“13).

4

Bicycle Passing

When approaching or passing a bicyclist, slow down and allow as much space as possible. Do not pass a bicyclist immediately before making a right turn โ€” slow down and let the cyclist clear the intersection first. Bicyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as other vehicles on the road (p.81).

5

Following Distance

Maintain a minimum following distance of 2 seconds under prime conditions (p.17, p.62). Under adverse conditions (rain, snow, ice, fog), use a 4-second following rule (p.17). Increase even more when following motorcycles, large trucks, or when towing.

6

Turn Signal Distance

Signal at least 100 feet before making a turn or changing lanes. At speeds above 40 mph, signal at least 200 feet before turning (K.S.A. 8-1548, p.17). Hold the signal until you are ready to make the actual turn.

7

School Bus Rules

You MUST stop for a school bus displaying red flashing lights โ€” from any direction โ€” unless you are approaching from the opposite direction on a highway separated by a median or other physical barrier. Remain stopped until red lights stop flashing and stop arm is retracted. Then proceed slowly, watching for children (p.18, p.50โ€“51).

8

Headlight Rules

Dim high beams when you come within about one-block distance of an oncoming vehicle. Use low beams when following another vehicle, in fog, rain, or snow (p.90โ€“91). Kansas requires headlights whenever your wipers are in use (p.67). Low beams: 150โ€“200 ft; high beams: 350โ€“400 ft (p.77).

9

Parallel Parking

When parallel parking, the finished position must be within 12 inches of the curb or edge of road (p.52). Know all 4 hill-parking scenarios: uphill with curb = turn wheels away from curb; downhill with curb = turn wheels into curb; no curb (either direction) = turn wheels toward edge of road (p.52).

10

Child Restraint Law

Children under 4: federally-approved child safety seat. Ages 4โ€“8: child safety seat or booster seat โ€” unless taller than 4'9" or heavier than 80 lbs (then seatbelt OK). Ages 8+: seatbelt required. All children under 14 must ride in the rear seat (K.S.A. 8-1344, p.16; K.S.A. 8-2501, p.27). Seatbelt use is a Primary Violation in Kansas.

๐Ÿ’ก Study Strategies That Work

01

Take the Exam Simulator First

Start with the 25-question exam simulator to see which areas you're weak in before deep study.

02

Use the Key Numbers Quiz

Memorize all the numbers โ€” BAC limits, following distance, signal distance, point thresholds. These show up on every test.

03

Review Your Missed Questions

The Weak Spots mode saves every question you got wrong. Replay it until you're hitting 90%+ before scheduling your test.

04

Read the Official Manual

Download the official Kansas Driving Handbook from www.ksrevenue.gov/dovdl.html. Every test question comes directly from this manual.

05

Don't Guess on Numbers

Specific numbers (distances, BAC levels, fees) are either right or wrong. Use the cheat sheet to drill these until memorized.

06

Study Road Signs

Sign questions are visual โ€” shape and color matter as much as meaning. Use the Road Signs Quiz mode to practice all 43 signs.
