Michigan SOS Written Test โ€” Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about the Michigan knowledge exam before you go.

How many questions are on the Michigan SOS knowledge test?

The test has 50 multiple-choice questions covering road signs, traffic laws, and safe driving โ€” all combined in one test with a single score. There are no separate sections.

What is the passing score?

You need 80% overall โ€” that's 40 out of 50 questions correct. You can miss up to 10 questions and still pass. The test is available at Secretary of State offices at no charge, or online from home for a $6.50 convenience fee.

What happens if I fail?

You must wait until the next business day to retake the test. There's no limit on attempts, but you'll need to pay the testing fee again. If you fail the driving skills test, you must wait 7 days.

Is the test timed?

No, the real Michigan SOS test has no time limit. Take your time and read carefully. Our practice exam uses a 30-minute timer to simulate slight pressure, but the real test lets you go at your own pace.

How old do I need to be for a learner's permit?

You can apply for a Level 1 Learner's License at 14 years and 9 months after completing Segment 1 of driver education. Under-18 drivers must go through Michigan's three-level GDL program (driver education is required). You must hold your Level 1 for at least 6 months before advancing to Level 2.

What documents do I need to bring?

For a first-time permit or license, bring:

Does Michigan use "DUI" or "OWI"?

Michigan uses OWI โ€” Operating While Intoxicated. The test will use OWI terminology, not DUI. Key numbers: 0.08% BAC limit (21+), 0.02% BAC (under 21), 0.17%+ triggers "super drunk" enhanced penalties (up to 180 days jail). First OWI under 0.17% carries up to 93 days jail. Refusing a chemical test = automatic 1-year license suspension.

Is cannabis legal in Michigan?

Yes โ€” but driving impaired is still illegal. Michigan legalized recreational marijuana in 2018 and medical marijuana in 2008. However, driving under the influence of marijuana is an OWI offense. There is no legal THC limit like the 0.08% BAC for alcohol โ€” prosecutors must prove impairment. Medical marijuana cardholders cannot be charged simply for having THC in their system, but can still be charged if actually impaired.

How many hours of practice driving do I need?

50 hours of supervised behind-the-wheel driving, including at least 10 hours at night. Your supervisor must be a licensed parent, guardian, or designated adult age 21 or older seated in the front seat.

What's the probationary license curfew?

Level 2 curfew: 10 PM to 5 AM (until eligible for Level 3 full license at age 17). Michigan GDL: Level 1 (learner) โ†’ Level 2 (intermediate with curfew & passenger limits) โ†’ Level 3 (full license at age 17).
