Who must wear a helmet in Georgia, the penalties for not wearing one, and the eye-protection rules every rider should know.
Georgia has a universal motorcycle helmet law. Every motorcycle operator and passenger must wear a DOT-compliant helmet, regardless of age, experience or insurance status (GA Motorcycle Manual, Helmet Use).
A DOT-compliant helmet has a label attached stating the manufacturer's name and/or brand, the model, and the words DOT, FMVSS No. 218, CERTIFIED. The helmet must have no obvious defects such as cracks, loose padding or frayed straps, and must fasten securely (GA Motorcycle Manual, Helmet Selection).
There is no adult exemption in Georgia. Anyone on a motorcycle — the operator or a passenger — must wear a DOT-compliant helmet.
Moped riders are also covered: a person operating a moped on Georgia roads must wear DOT-compliant protective headgear (GA Motorcycle Manual, Mopeds).
Riding without a required DOT-compliant helmet violates Georgia law and can bring a fine and other penalties. Because the requirement also covers passengers, an operator can be held responsible for an unhelmeted passenger. Confirm current penalty amounts with the Georgia Department of Driver Services.
Separate from the helmet requirement, eye protection is required in Georgia. Without face protection, an object could hit you in the eye, face or mouth (GA Motorcycle Manual, Face and Eye Protection).
A plastic shatter-resistant face shield protects your whole face; goggles protect only your eyes. A windshield is not a substitute for a face shield, and glasses or sunglasses do not provide adequate protection. Effective eye or face protection must be free of scratches, give a clear view to either side, and fasten securely (GA Motorcycle Manual, Face and Eye Protection).
A legal motorcycle helmet must meet the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) FMVSS 218 standard. Look for the "DOT" certification label on the back. Helmets that meet stricter Snell or ECE standards offer additional protection. Avoid novelty helmets — they are not legal head protection.
