Illinois Motorcycle Knowledge Test Cheat Sheet
The fastest way to review before your SOS motorcycle test — the numbers and rules most likely to appear.
🪪 License & Permit
- Class L = motor-driven cycle under 150cc; Class M = any motorcycle
- Pass a separate motorcycle exam — knowledge test + Rider Skill Test
- Riders 16-17 must also complete an IDOT motorcycle training course
- An IDOT course (age 16+) waives the written AND driving tests at a facility
- IDOT course completion card is valid 1 year
- Instruction permit: daylight only, supervised by a licensed rider 21+
🔢 Most-Tested Numbers
- Following gap3 seconds minimum
- Front brakeAt least 3/4 (70%+) of stopping power
- Scan ahead12 seconds along your path
- Dead red lightProceed after not less than 120 seconds
- Passing on the rightNeeds 8+ feet of clear pavement
- Legal BAC limit0.08 BAC (THC 5 ng/ml)
🪖 Helmet & Gear
- A helmet is NOT required by Illinois law — at any age
- Eye protection IS required — glasses, goggles, or a windshield
- A face shield protects the whole face; goggles protect only the eyes
- A helmet must meet U.S. DOT standards and fit snugly all around
- Keep the helmet securely fastened — or it flies off in a crash
- Don't wear tinted eye protection at night
✅ Remember This Answer
- Stop quickly? Both brakes at the same time
- Front wheel locks? Release the front brake, then reapply
- Curve? Slow, Look, Lean, Roll
- To lean/turn? Press the handgrip toward the turn
- Swerve? Brake before or after — never during
- Mental strategy? SIPDE — Scan, Identify, Predict, Decide, Execute
✅ Remember This Answer (2)
- Rain starts? Ride in cars' tire tracks, not the center
- Railroad tracks? Cross straight, within your lane
- Tailgater behind you? Change lanes and let them pass
- Cut reaction time? Cover the clutch and both brakes
- Be seen by day? Headlight on, high beam, bright gear
- Being passed? Stay in the center of your lane
⚠️ Common Test Traps
- "No room to stop" → Swerve — don't just brake harder
- "Stop fastest" → Both brakes — front gives 70%+
- "Brake while swerving" → Wrong — brake before or after only
- "Eye contact" → Never proves a driver will yield
- "Lane sharing" → Usually prohibited
- "Following distance" → 3 seconds minimum, more if slippery
⚠️ More Test Traps
- "Curve too fast" → Slow BEFORE the turn — not hard mid-curve
- "Wobble" → Close the throttle gradually — never brake or accelerate
- "Stuck throttle" → Engine cut-off switch + pull in the clutch
- "Carrying a passenger" → Bike responds slower; start slowing earlier
- "One drink" → Even one drink significantly affects riding
- "Chased by a dog" → Downshift, approach slowly, then accelerate away
🚨 Emergency Situations
- Front tire flat → Steering feels heavy; hold grips, ease off, coast
- Rear tire flat → Back jerks/sways; ease off throttle, edge off the road
- Stuck throttle → Engine cut-off switch + clutch in at the same time
- Wobble → Grip firmly, close the throttle gradually — do not brake
- Engine seizes → Squeeze the clutch, pull off, check the oil
- Obstacle you must cross → Hit it near 90°, slow, straight, rise on the pegs
🌧️ Surfaces, Weather & Night
- Pavement is most slippery just after rain starts
- Slippery surface: slow before it, no sudden moves, both brakes gently
- Cross parallel tracks or seams at 45° or more
- Rain grooves cause a harmless wander — relax and ride straight across
- Night: ride slower and open up your following distance
- Night: high beam when not following or meeting a vehicle
🏍️ Motorcycle Control
- Countersteer: press left grip → lean left → go left
- Use both brakes every stop — the front gives 70%+ of the power
- Corner in four steps: SLOW · LOOK · LEAN · ROLL
- Slow tight turn: lean the bike only, keep your body straight
- Change gears before you enter a turn
- Stay in first gear while stopped so you can move out quickly
🍺 Alcohol & Impairment
- Legally under the influence0.08 BAC
- Cannabis (THC) limit5 ng/ml of whole blood
- Alcohol clears~1 drink per hour
- As little as one drink significantly affects riding
- Judgment is one of the first abilities alcohol impairs
- Nearly half of riders killed in crashes had been drinking
🎯 Last-Minute Before the Test
- Both brakes to stop — front brake = 70%+ of the power
- Every curve: SLOW · LOOK · LEAN · ROLL
- Press the grip toward the turn to lean (countersteer)
- Brake OR swerve — never both at once
- Follow at 3 seconds — more on slippery or crowded roads
- Helmet NOT required; eye protection IS required; headlight always on
- SIPDE = Scan, Identify, Predict, Decide, Execute · 0.08 BAC = under the influence

The Illinois Motorcycle Operator Manual does not publish a question count or passing score; it includes only 4 sample knowledge questions. The 15-question, 12-to-pass (80%) figure shown here is the format used for the motorcycle endorsement supplement; a full Class M applicant may also take a general-knowledge test.
