What a motorcycle endorsement is, who needs one, and how to add it to your Indiana driver license.
In Indiana the motorcycle privilege is a motorcycle endorsement added to your existing Indiana driver's license — not a separate stand-alone license. To legally ride on public roads you need either that endorsement or a valid motorcycle learner's permit.
A motorcycle endorsement may be issued to Indiana residents who are at least 16 years and 90 days of age and hold a valid Indiana driver's license. You are not eligible if your driving privileges are revoked, suspended or invalidated.
| Endorsement | Motorcycle-Only License | |
|---|---|---|
| Who it's for | Drivers who already hold an Indiana license | Riders without a regular driver license |
| Added to | Your existing license | Issued as its own license |
| Knowledge test | Motorcycle knowledge test | Motorcycle knowledge test |
| Lets you drive a car | Yes — keeps your car privileges | No — motorcycle only |
Completing an approved Ride Safe Indiana Entry Level Motorcycle Safety Course is itself a complete path to the endorsement (Option One) — it replaces the BMV motorcycle skills exam entirely. The course is five hours of classroom instruction plus 10 hours of practical riding, and motorcycles are provided free of charge for your use.
Active-duty military members who are Indiana residents stationed outside the state may obtain an endorsement by completing a military or other safety course within the past year and submitting a Motorcycle Safety Course Completion document, a copy of their Indiana driver's license, and a copy of their military ID or orders to motorcyclesafety@bmv.in.gov.
Indiana BMV fees apply to add a motorcycle endorsement to your license and to take the knowledge and skills exams; skills-exam providers may also charge their own fee. Confirm the current amounts at in.gov/bmv before you apply.
The motorcycle endorsement renews together with your Indiana driver's license — there is no separate motorcycle renewal cycle. A learner's permit, by contrast, is valid one year and may be renewed only one time.

Indiana licensing is run through Ride Safe Indiana, a program within the BMV. A learner's permit holder must wear a DOT helmet, ride only in daylight, and carry no passengers.
