What to do, what to bring, and what to expect at the BMV office — start to finish.
An Indiana motorcycle learner's permit lets you ride on public roads — under restrictions — while you prepare for a motorcycle endorsement. To get one you pass a motorcycle knowledge exam and a vision screening at an Indiana BMV branch. The whole process is run through Ride Safe Indiana, the motorcycle safety program within the Bureau of Motor Vehicles.
The steps below follow the official Ride Safe Indiana / BMV process. Always confirm current fees and accepted documents at in.gov/bmv before you go.
You must be an Indiana resident with a valid Indiana driver's license, and at least 16 years and 90 days of age to ultimately receive the endorsement. You are not eligible for a permit or endorsement if your driving privileges are revoked, suspended or invalidated.
The knowledge exam is drawn from the Indiana Motorcycle Operator Manual. Focus on lane positioning, the SEE strategy, braking and swerving, turning, and the Ride Safe Indiana licensing rules.
Take the 25-question motorcycle knowledge exam in person at a BMV branch — you need 20 correct (80%) to pass — and pass a standard vision screening. If you are under 18, a parent or guardian must sign an Agreement of Financial Liability.
On passing, you are issued a motorcycle learner's permit valid for one year. It may be renewed only one time.
While riding on a learner's permit you must hold a valid Indiana driver's license, wear a DOT-compliant helmet (49 CFR 571.218), ride only during daylight hours, and carry no passengers.
Pass the motorcycle skills exam at an authorized Ride Safe Indiana location — you provide the motorcycle and sign a Waiver of Liability — then visit a BMV branch with your signed and stamped permit to add the motorcycle endorsement. Completing an approved Ride Safe Indiana safety course is an alternative path that replaces the skills exam.
