Kentucky Motorcycle Test Tips

How to walk into the KYTC office prepared and pass the motorcycle knowledge test on your first attempt.

🚫 Common Mistakes to Avoid

📅 Study Schedule

One-Week Plan

Days 1-2: read the Kentucky Motorcycle Manual and this study guide. Days 3-5: take a practice test each day and review every missed question, focusing on SEE, lane positioning and braking. Days 6-7: take full practice tests until you pass comfortably — aim for at least 80%.

One-Day Plan

Skim the cheat sheet, take two or three practice tests, and spend the rest of your time on your weakest topics. Remember the standard target: 80% to pass.

📍 Kentucky Gotchas

The helmet exemption is time-based, not just age-based. To ride without a helmet you must be over 21 and have held a motorcycle license for at least one year — a 25-year-old who was just licensed must still wear one.

Eye protection is required even without a helmet. The operator must always use an approved eye-protection device while the motorcycle is in motion.

The skills test can be waived. An approved motorcycle rider training course that includes a similar test of skill exempts you from the licensing skills test.

Permit riders cannot carry passengers. A rider operating on a motorcycle instruction permit is not authorized to carry a passenger.

Kentucky does not publish an official motorcycle knowledge-test count; 30 questions / 80% is a strong multi-site consensus. You may earn a license by passing the knowledge and skills tests, or an approved motorcycle rider training course exempts you from the skills test. The operator must always use an approved eye-protection device, even when a helmet is not required.
