What to do, what to bring, and what to expect at the OMV office — start to finish.
In Louisiana, the authority to ride a motorcycle is a motorcycle endorsement added to your regular driver's license — not a separate license class. To earn it you must pass a written knowledge test and an on-cycle skills test administered by the Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV).
The steps below follow Louisiana's motorcycle licensing process as described in the Louisiana Motorcycle Operator Manual. Always confirm current fees, minimum-age rules, accepted documents and office locations at expresslane.la.gov before you go.
You must hold or be applying for a Louisiana driver's license. Riders under 17 may not drive on public roads between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. unless accompanied by a parent, guardian, or another person 21 or older with custody of them.
Every question on the knowledge test is based on this manual. It combines the standardized Motorcycle Safety Foundation safe-riding content with a section on Louisiana's own motorcycle laws — study both parts.
Take the 25-question multiple-choice knowledge test at an OMV location. You need at least 80% — 20 correct — to pass. The exam also includes an eyesight test and questions on highway signs and traffic rules.
You must demonstrate basic vehicle-control and crash-avoidance skills on a motorcycle. Louisiana law waives the on-cycle skills test if you have successfully completed the state's Motorcycle Safety, Awareness, and Operator Training Program.
Once you pass, OMV adds the motorcycle endorsement to your driver's license. Pay the applicable fee — confirm the current amount with OMV.
Wear an approved helmet and eye protection, carry your endorsed license, keep proof of liability insurance in the motorcycle, and have the motorcycle inspected yearly.
Check the official OMV page for current fees and accepted forms of payment.
