What a motorcycle endorsement is, who needs one, and how to add it to your Louisiana driver license.
Louisiana does not issue motorcycles a separate license class. Instead, the privilege to operate a motorcycle is granted by a motorcycle endorsement added to one of the basic driver's license classes you already hold or are applying for.
The endorsement is added only after you take and successfully pass tests specifically designed for the operation of a motorcycle — a written knowledge test and an on-cycle skills test.
| Endorsement | Motorcycle-Only License | |
|---|---|---|
| Who it's for | Drivers who already hold a Louisiana license | Riders without a regular driver license |
| Added to | Your existing license | Issued as its own license |
| Knowledge test | Motorcycle knowledge test | Motorcycle knowledge test |
| Lets you drive a car | Yes — keeps your car privileges | No — motorcycle only |
Louisiana law (R.S. 32:408) provides that no operator's skill test is required if an applicant has successfully completed the Motorcycle Safety, Awareness, and Operator Training Program provided for in state law.
The waiver covers the on-cycle skills test only — every applicant must still pass the written knowledge test. For course locations, the manual directs riders to call the Louisiana Department of Public Safety or visit the Louisiana State Police website.
Because the motorcycle endorsement is part of your Louisiana driver's license rather than a stand-alone credential, it is renewed together with the license — there is no separate motorcycle renewal cycle.
An endorsement fee applies when the motorcycle endorsement is added. Confirm the current knowledge-test and endorsement fees with the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles at expresslane.la.gov.
