How to walk into the OMV office prepared and pass the motorcycle knowledge test on your first attempt.
Days 1-2: read the Louisiana Motorcycle Operator Manual and this study guide. Days 3-5: take a practice test each day and review every missed question, focusing on hazard awareness, lane positions and braking. Days 6-7: take full practice tests until you pass comfortably, and review the Louisiana-law section.
Skim the cheat sheet, take two or three practice tests, and spend the rest of your time on your weakest topics and on Louisiana's helmet, eye-protection and lane rules. Remember: 20 of 25 correct (80%) to pass.
Universal helmet law. Every Louisiana rider and passenger must wear an approved safety helmet, at every age — there is no adult exemption.
Eye protection is its own rule. You must wear approved eye protection unless the motorcycle has a windshield of sufficient height, and night eye protection may not be tinted.
Lane splitting is illegal, but two abreast is allowed. You may not ride between lanes or rows of vehicles, yet two motorcycles may ride abreast in a single lane.
The skills test can be waived, the written test cannot. Completing Louisiana's Motorcycle Safety, Awareness, and Operator Training Program waives only the on-cycle skills test.
