North Dakota Motorcycle Test Tips

How to walk into the NDDOT office prepared and pass the motorcycle knowledge test on your first attempt.

🚫 Common Mistakes to Avoid

📅 Study Schedule

One-Week Plan

Days 1-2: read the North Dakota Motorcycle Operator Manual and this study guide. Days 3-5: take a practice test each day and review every missed question, focusing on SEE, lane positions and braking. Days 6-7: take full practice tests until you pass comfortably - aim for 20 of 25 (80%).

One-Day Plan

Skim the cheat sheet, take two or three practice tests, and spend the rest of your time on your weakest topics. Remember: 3-second following gap, front brake about 70%, helmet required under 18, and 20 of 25 correct (80%) to pass.

✅ Test-Day Checklist

📍 North Dakota Gotchas

Three-second following distance. This edition of the manual teaches a three-second minimum, not two - and four seconds or more when it is slippery or traffic is heavy.

You need a Class M permit first. You may not operate a motorcycle at all until you hold the Class M permit, and on the permit you cannot ride after dark or carry passengers.

The skill test, not the written test, is waived. An approved safety course completed within the last year waives only the on-cycle skill test; you still pass the knowledge test.

Bring your own motorcycle. You furnish your own motorcycle for the skill test and submit it for an equipment inspection, and skill tests are not given in inclement weather.

The 2025-2027 manual teaches a THREE-second following distance (4+ in poor conditions) and a front brake supplying about 70% of stopping power. Partial helmet law (under 18). DUI 0.08% adult / 0.02% under 21.
