How to Get Your Utah Motorcycle Permit

What to do, what to bring, and what to expect at the DLD office — start to finish.

Overview

A Utah motorcycle learner permit lets you practice riding while you prepare for the on-cycle skills test that earns your motorcycle endorsement. You apply in person at a Driver License Division (DLD) office, and the written test is based on the Utah Motorcycle Operator Manual.

The steps below follow the official Utah DLD motorcycle process. Always confirm current fees and accepted documents on dld.utah.gov before you go.

Step-by-Step

1

Confirm you are eligible

You must be at least 16 years old and already hold a valid Utah Class D (regular) or commercial driver license. The motorcycle privilege is an endorsement added to that license, not a separate license class.

2

Study and pass the written knowledge test

Study the Utah Motorcycle Operator Manual, including the 'Motorcycling in Utah' section of state law. At a DLD office you take a vision test and the 25-question motorcycle knowledge test, and you need 80% (20 of 25) to pass.

3

Get your six-month learner permit

Pass the tests, pay the fee, and you receive a motorcycle learner permit valid for six months. For the first two months you may not carry passengers, ride between 10 PM and 6 AM, or ride on a highway posted at 60 mph or more.

4

Practice and clear the two-month hold

After two months the permit restrictions are lifted. Anyone under 19 must hold the permit for the full two months — but completing the Utah Basic Rider Course (BRC) waives that two-month requirement.

5

Take the BRC or prepare for the skills test

You can complete the Utah Basic Rider Course (BRC) — which furnishes the motorcycle and helmet — or practice on your own bike. Apply for your endorsement within six months of the BRC and the DLD may waive the skills (road) test.

6

Pass the on-cycle skills test

Bring your own motorcycle to a DLD office (skills tests are by appointment at most offices) and complete all four parts of the skills test. The engine size of the bike you test on sets your endorsement's tier: test on 650cc or larger for an unrestricted endorsement.
