Wyoming Motorcycle Helmet Law

Who must wear a helmet in Wyoming, the penalties for not wearing one, and the eye-protection rules every rider should know.

Partial Helmet Law

📋 The Current Law

Wyoming has a partial (minor-only) motorcycle helmet law. No minor — any operator or passenger under 18 — may ride a motorcycle unless wearing approved, securely fastened protective headgear (WY manual p.44).

Riders 18 and older are not legally required to wear a helmet in Wyoming. The manual still strongly recommends a helmet for every rider, noting that helmeted riders are three times more likely to survive a head injury (WY manual p.45).

🪖 Who Must Wear a Helmet

Minors (under 18) must wear an approved helmet whether operating the motorcycle or riding as a passenger. The headgear must meet or exceed the American National Standards Institute standard and be securely fastened on the head (WY manual p.44-45).

Adult riders 18 and older may legally choose not to wear a helmet. Because most riders are going slower than 30 mph when a crash occurs — speeds at which a helmet can cut head injuries by half — the manual urges every rider to wear one anyway (WY manual p.45-46).

⚠️ Penalties

Riding or carrying a minor passenger without the required approved headgear violates Wyoming's motorcycle equipment law and can bring a citation. Because the requirement covers passengers as well as operators, an adult operator can be cited for an unhelmeted minor passenger. Confirm current fine amounts with WYDOT Driver Services.

👓 Eye Protection

Wyoming law does not require eye or face protection for motorcyclists — this is a genuine difference from many other states. The Wyoming Motorcycle Manual strongly recommends a shatter-resistant face shield or goggles for every rider (WY manual p.46).

A windshield is not a substitute for a face shield or goggles, and neither eyeglasses nor sunglasses will reliably protect your eyes. Effective eye or face protection is free of scratches, fastens securely, gives a clear side view, and lets air pass to reduce fogging; tinted protection should never be worn at night (WY manual p.46-47).

✅ DOT-Approved Helmet Standards

A legal motorcycle helmet must meet the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) FMVSS 218 standard. Look for the "DOT" certification label on the back. Helmets that meet stricter Snell or ECE standards offer additional protection. Avoid novelty helmets — they are not legal head protection.

WYDOT confirms all written tests require 80%; the 25-question count comes from third-party sources. Wyoming's manual is WYDOT's own document — it teaches SIPDE (not SEE), helmets are required only for minors, eye protection is not required by law, and motorcycle applicants may take the written test twice in one day.
