What to do, what to bring, and what to expect at the WYDOT office — start to finish.
A Wyoming motorcycle instruction permit lets you practice while you prepare for a Class M license (or the 'M' classification on a Class A, B or C license). You apply in person at a WYDOT Driver Services exam station, and the knowledge test is based on the Wyoming Motorcycle Manual.
The steps below follow WYDOT's published motorcycle licensing process. Always confirm current fees and accepted documents at dot.state.wy.us before you go.
A youth at least 15 may get a restricted-use motorcycle instruction permit; full motorcycle privileges follow the riding test. Applicants under 18 must have a Minor's Release signed by a parent or legal guardian. You must show proof of identity and Wyoming residency (two documents showing a residential address).
Study the Wyoming Motorcycle Manual. The motorcycle written test covers traffic signs and signals, pavement markings, traffic laws, safe-riding practices, crash prevention and equipment. Motorcycle applicants may take the written test twice in one day; an applicant who misses 13 or more questions must wait three days to retest.
You must have 20/40 acuity with both eyes (with or without glasses) and a combined horizontal field of at least 120 degrees. If you need glasses or contacts to pass, you must wear them while riding.
After passing the written exam and vision test, you receive a restricted-use instruction permit valid for 90 days; the riding skills test is not given for the 90-day permit. The motorcycle license fee is charged. A permit holder may not carry a passenger.
If you also pass an on-cycle skills test — basic vehicle control and crash-avoidance maneuvers in a controlled, off-street area — your permit is good for one year. The skills test is waived if you present an approved Motorcycle Safety Course completion card (honored up to two years), and applicants who fail must wait 24 hours to retest.
Pass all parts of the examination — written knowledge, vision screening and on-cycle skills test — to be issued the Class M license or the 'M' classification. Completing the Wyoming Novice Rider Course waives both the written and skills tests when you present the completion card within two years.
Check the official WYDOT page for current fees and accepted forms of payment.

WYDOT confirms all written tests require 80%; the 25-question count comes from third-party sources. Wyoming's manual is WYDOT's own document — it teaches SIPDE (not SEE), helmets are required only for minors, eye protection is not required by law, and motorcycle applicants may take the written test twice in one day.
