Ohio BMV Written Test — Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about the Ohio knowledge exam before you go.

How many questions are on the Ohio BMV knowledge test?

The test has 40 questions split into two scored sections: 20 road signs and 20 road rules. You must pass both sections independently with 75% on each (15/20).

What is the passing score?

You need 75% on each section — that's 15 out of 20 on road signs AND 15 out of 20 on road rules. Your overall score doesn't matter; each section must independently meet the 75% threshold.

What happens if I fail?

You must wait until the next business day to retake the test. There's no limit on attempts, but you'll need to pay the testing fee again. If you fail the driving skills test and are under 21, you must wait 2 days before retesting. If you are 21 or older, you must complete an Abbreviated Adult Driver Training Course before a second attempt.

Is the test timed?

No, the real Ohio BMV test has no time limit. Take your time and read carefully. Our practice exam uses a 60-minute timer to simulate slight pressure, but the real test lets you go at your own pace.

How old do I need to be for a learner's permit?

Age 15½ (15 years and 6 months minimum). Driver's education (24 hours classroom + 8 hours behind-the-wheel) is required for all first-time applicants under 21. You must hold the TIPIC for at least 6 months before applying for a probationary license (under-18 only).

What documents do I need to bring?

For a first-time permit or license, bring:

Does Ohio use "OVI" or "DUI"?

Ohio uses OVI — Operating a Vehicle Impaired. The test will use OVI terminology, not DUI or DWI. Key numbers: 0.08% BAC limit (21+), 0.02% BAC (under 21), 0.17%+ triggers high-tier OVI penalties. Refusing a chemical test = automatic 1-year license suspension.

Is cannabis legal in Ohio?

Yes — but driving impaired is still illegal. Ohio legalized medical marijuana in 2016 (HB 523) and recreational marijuana in November 2023 (Issue 2). However, driving under the influence of marijuana is an OVI offense. Ohio sets a per se THC limit of 2 nanograms per milliliter of blood — driving at or above this level can result in an OVI charge. Medical marijuana cardholders cannot be charged simply for having THC in their system, but can still be charged if actually impaired.

How many hours of practice driving do I need?

50 hours of supervised behind-the-wheel driving, including at least 10 hours at night. Your supervisor must be at least 21 years old with a valid Ohio driver's license.

What's the probationary license curfew?

Ohio has a two-phase curfew for probationary license holders under 18. During the first 12 months: no driving midnight to 6 AM without a parent/guardian. After 12 months: no driving 1 AM to 5 AM. Exceptions include driving to/from work (Form BMV 2825), school-sponsored or religious events (Form BMV 2826), or with a parent/guardian. Full license at age 18.
