Testing & Licensing Process
In Tennessee, the Tennessee Dept. of Safety & Homeland Security (TDOS) handles both testing and licensing. TDOS administers all vision, written, and road skills tests β by appointment only at Driver Service Centers. After passing, you receive your permit or license credential at the same Driver Service Center location.
What to Bring
For a first-time permit application:
- Original birth certificate or certified copy (proof of identity)
- Social Security card (bring the card as proof)
- 1 proof of Tennessee residency (2 for REAL ID), dated less than one year
- School Compliance Verification Form if under 18 (Consequences for school violations law)
- Parent/guardian present to sign if under 18
