Wisconsin DMV Written Test โ€” Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about the Wisconsin knowledge exam before you go.

How many questions are on the Wisconsin DMV knowledge test?

The test has 50 questions split into two scored sections: 34 general knowledge questions and 16 road sign identification questions. You must pass both sections independently.

What is the passing score?

You need 80% on each section โ€” that's roughly 27/34 on general knowledge and 13/16 on road signs. Your overall score doesn't matter; each section must meet the 80% threshold independently.

What happens if I fail?

You must wait until the next business day to retake the test. There's no limit on attempts, but you'll need to pay the testing fee again. If you fail the driving skills test, you must wait 7 days.

Is the test timed?

No, the real Wisconsin DMV test has no time limit. Take your time and read carefully. Our practice exam uses a 30-minute timer to simulate slight pressure, but the real test lets you go at your own pace.

How old do I need to be for a learner's permit?

Age 15 years old. If you are under 18, you must be enrolled in a driver education program โ€” driver's ed is required for all under-18 applicants. You must hold the permit for at least 180 days (6 months) before applying for a license.

What documents do I need to bring?

Does Wisconsin use "DUI" or "OWI"?

Wisconsin uses OWI โ€” Operating While Intoxicated. The test will use OWI terminology, not DUI. Key numbers: 0.08% BAC limit (21+), 0.00% BAC (absolute zero tolerance for under 21), 0.15%+ triggers mandatory IID. Refusing a chemical test = automatic 1-year loss of driving privileges.

Is cannabis legal in Wisconsin?

No โ€” cannabis is illegal in Wisconsin. Unlike neighboring Illinois and Michigan, Wisconsin has not legalized recreational or medical marijuana. Possession is a criminal offense. Driving under the influence of any controlled substance, including marijuana, is an OWI offense with the same penalties as alcohol-impaired driving.

How many hours of practice driving do I need?

50 hours of supervised behind-the-wheel driving, including at least 10 hours at night. Your supervisor must be at least 21 years old with at least 2 years of licensed driving experience.

What's the probationary license curfew?

Probationary license curfew: midnight to 5 AM for the first 9 months (unless you turn 18 first). Wisconsin GDL: Instruction Permit (age 15) โ†’ Probationary License (age 16, after 6 months with permit) โ†’ Regular License (after probationary period). GDL restrictions end when you turn 18.
