Arizona MVD Permit Test FAQ
Common questions about the Arizona MVD knowledge test, learner's permit, GDL program, and driver's license requirements.
How many questions are on the Arizona MVD knowledge test? ▼
The Arizona MVD knowledge test has 30 multiple-choice questions covering traffic laws, road signs, and safe-driving rules drawn directly from the Arizona Driver License Manual. You can take it in person at any MVD office, at an Authorized Third Party provider, or online via the Permit Test @ Home program at AZMVDNow.gov.
What is the passing score for the Arizona written test? ▼
You need 80% to pass. On a 30-question test, that's at least 24 correct — you can miss no more than 6.
What happens if I fail the knowledge test? ▼
You can retake the Arizona knowledge test after further study. The MVD points to azdot.gov/mvd for official practice materials. Under-18 applicants must continue to meet the parent-signed application and driver-education/supervised-driving requirements before re-applying for an instruction permit.
What is the minimum age for an Arizona learner license? ▼
You may be issued a graduated or motorcycle instruction permit at 15 years 6 months. Operator (Class D) permits require you to be 18. Permits are valid 12 months. Applicants under 18 must have the application signed by a parent, legal guardian, foster parent, or employer, witnessed by an MVD agent or notary.
What are the GDL restrictions in Arizona? ▼
For the first 6 months with a Class G (graduated) license, drivers may not drive between midnight and 5 a.m. and may not carry more than one passenger under 18. Exceptions: a parent or legal guardian (with a valid Class A/B/C or D license) rides in the front seat; the passengers are siblings; or you are driving directly to/from a sanctioned school-sponsored activity, employment, sanctioned religious activity, or a family emergency. Penalties for under-18 violations: 1st = mandatory Traffic Survival School; 2nd = 3-month suspension; 3rd = 6-month suspension.
What is Arizona's Zero Tolerance law for minors? ▼
Under 21, any trace of alcohol, marijuana, medications, or illegal drugs that impair your ability to drive will result in license suspension for 2 years. You cannot legally drive with any spirituous liquor in your body if you are under 21.
What is the legal BAC limit in Arizona? ▼
0.08% BAC for drivers 21 and over. 0.04% BAC while operating a commercial vehicle. Under 21: Zero Tolerance — any measurable alcohol. Extreme DUI begins at 0.15% BAC. Arizona also has an Implied Consent law: refusing a chemical test after a DUI arrest is an automatic 12-month license suspension for the first refusal, 24 months for a second refusal within 84 months.
What is the speed limit in an Arizona urban or residential area? ▼
When not posted: 15 mph approaching a school crosswalk, 25 mph in any business or residential district, 55 mph on open highways or city freeways, 65 mph on designated open highways, and 75 mph on rural freeways. Fines double in work zones when signs are posted.
How close to a fire hydrant can I park in Arizona? ▼
No parking within 15 feet of a fire hydrant, 20 feet of a crosswalk at an intersection, or 50 feet of a railroad crossing. You also may not park on a sidewalk, in front of any driveway, within an intersection, on a bridge or in a tunnel, on any freeway or interstate (except emergencies), or in any area with signs prohibiting parking.

Extreme DUI (0.15%+): ≥30 days jail (45 days at 0.20%+), fine ≥$2,500. $25,000 bodily injury liability for one person, $50,000 bodily injury for two or more persons, and $15,000 property damage. Proof of current insurance must be in the vehicle while it is being operated. Insurance companies notify MVD of all cancellations; lapses can lead to registration or license suspension.
Can I turn right or left on a red light in Arizona? ▼
Right on red: permitted after a complete stop unless a "No Turn On Red" sign is posted. Yield to pedestrians, bicyclists, and cross traffic. Left on red: permitted only from a one-way street onto another one-way street, after coming to a complete stop and yielding to traffic and pedestrians, unless a sign prohibits it.

Arizona law requires you to notify MVD of any name or address change within 10 days. Operator license fees vary by age: $25 (16–39), $20 (40–44), $15 (45–49), $10 (50 and over / 5-year renewal).
