How to Get Your Arizona Learner's Permit

A step-by-step guide to getting your Arizona Learner License and moving through the GDL program to a full driver's license.

πŸ“‹ Arizona License Classes & GDL Overview

Arizona issues driver licenses by class: Class G (graduated) for drivers 16 to under 18, Class D (operator) for adults 18+, Class M (motorcycle), and Class A, B, C (commercial). The Class G graduated license carries first-six-month restrictions on night driving and teen passengers. All applicants must first hold an instruction permit β€” generally for at least 6 months β€” before testing for a driver license.

πŸͺͺ Getting Your Arizona Instruction Permit

1

Confirm You Meet the Age Requirement

15 years 6 months for a graduated or motorcycle permit; 18 for an operator (Class D) permit. Applicants under 18 need an application signed by a parent, legal guardian, foster parent, or employer β€” the signature must be witnessed by an MVD agent or a notary public.

2

Start Your Application on AZMVDNow.gov

Create or sign in to your AZMVDNow account and begin a driver license application. Arizona offers Permit Test @ Home, so many first-time applicants take the written test online. You can also schedule an appointment at an MVD or Authorized Third Party office.

3

Gather Your Documents

Bring originals of acceptable identity documents. For a Travel ID (REAL ID–compliant), you must also prove your Arizona residency with two documents.

  • Proof of identity: valid unexpired U.S. Passport / Passport Card, certified birth certificate, Consular Report of Birth Abroad, Permanent Resident Card (I-551), unexpired EAD (I-766 or I-688B), Naturalization (N-550/N-570), or Certificate of Citizenship (N-560/N-561)
  • A valid Social Security number
  • For Travel ID: two documents from a business, organization, or government agency showing your name and physical Arizona residential address
  • If under 18: parent/guardian signed, notarized or MVD-witnessed application
4

Pass the Vision Screening & Knowledge Test

A vision screening is given at the office or through an Authorized Third Party. Pass the Arizona MVD knowledge test with at least 80% (24 correct out of 30). Male applicants under 26 automatically consent to Selective Service registration as part of the application.

5

Pay the Fee

Instruction Permit: $7. Restricted Instruction Permit: $3. Motorcycle Endorsement: $7. Payments accepted in cash, credit card, cashier's check or money order made payable to "Motor Vehicle Division."
