Everything important from the Colorado Driver Handbook (December 2024) — organized for the exam
Memorize these numbers first. Colorado DMV test questions are frequently built around specific distances, speeds, BAC levels, and time periods. These come up constantly.
Road signs are tested heavily. Know each sign's shape, color, and meaning. The real test often shows a sign description and asks what it means.
| Shape | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Octagon (8-sided) | STOP — always and only | Stop sign |
| Triangle (pointing down) | YIELD — give right of way | Yield sign |
| Diamond | WARNING — hazard ahead | Curve, pedestrian, deer |
| Pentagon (5-sided) | SCHOOL ZONE | School crossing |
| Pennant (triangle right) | NO PASSING ZONE | No-passing pennant |
| Round (circle) | RAILROAD CROSSING advance warning | RR crossing sign |
| Rectangle (vertical) | REGULATORY — rules you must follow | Speed limit, turn restrictions |
| Rectangle (horizontal) | GUIDE or INFORMATION | Street name, mile marker |
| X-shaped crossbuck | RAILROAD CROSSING — treat like yield | Railroad crossbuck |
| Color | Category | What It Means |
|---|---|---|
| Red | Regulatory — STOP / PROHIBIT | Stop, yield, do not enter, wrong way, no-turn circles |
| Yellow | WARNING | General hazard warnings — curves, hills, intersections, animals |
| Orange | WORK ZONE / CONSTRUCTION | All orange signs = construction or maintenance ahead. Colorado work-zone violations carry DOUBLED fines ( Construction Zones). |
| Green | GUIDE / DIRECTIONAL | Highway exits, distances, direction, mile markers |
| Blue | SERVICES | Gas, food, lodging, hospital, rest area |
| Brown | RECREATION / CULTURAL | Parks, campgrounds, historical sites, scenic areas |
| White | REGULATORY | Speed limits, lane rules, turn restrictions |
| Fluorescent Yellow-Green | WARNING — pedestrian / school / bike | School zones, crosswalks, bike lanes |
| Fluorescent Pink | INCIDENT MANAGEMENT | Crash clean-up, debris removal, temporary traffic control |
Right of way is the #1 failure topic on the DMV knowledge test. Master every scenario below — these questions will be on your exam.
| Signal | What You Must Do |
|---|---|
| Solid GREEN | Proceed — but yield to traffic already in intersection |
| Solid YELLOW | Prepare to stop if safe; proceed only if stopping would be dangerous |
| Solid RED | Stop completely; may turn right on red after stop and yield (unless posted) |
| GREEN ARROW | Protected turn — oncoming traffic must stop. You may turn in the arrow's direction, but still yield to vehicles and pedestrians already in the intersection. |
| YELLOW ARROW | Protected turn is ending — prepare to yield or stop |
| Flashing YELLOW ARROW | Unprotected turn — you MAY turn but MUST yield to oncoming and pedestrians |
| Flashing RED | Treat exactly like a STOP sign — stop, yield, proceed when safe |
| Flashing YELLOW | Caution — slow down and proceed carefully. Do not need to stop. |
| RED + GREEN ARROW | Stop for through traffic; turn in direction of arrow only |
| Signal NOT working | Treat as ALL-WAY STOP — all traffic stops |
DUI questions appear on virtually every DMV knowledge test. Know the BAC levels, implied consent law, and penalties. Colorado uses the term "DUI" (Driving Under the Influence).
| Situation | Consequence |
|---|---|
| BAC 0.05–0.079% (driver 21+) = DWAI | 1st DWAI: $200–$500 fine, 2–180 days jail, 24–48 hrs community service, 8 points ( Table 1). |
| BAC 0.08%+ (driver 21+) = DUI per se | 1st DUI: $600–$1,000 fine, 5–365 days jail, 48–96 hrs community service, 9-month license revocation ( Table 1). |
| Impairment below 0.05% (or drugs only) | Colorado convicts based on impaired driving behavior and totality of circumstance — not only BAC. DUI/DWAI applies to alcohol, marijuana, prescription drugs, and illegal drugs. Marijuana: permissible inference of DUI at 5 ng/ml THC ( Driving Under the Influence). |
| Test refusal (Express Consent) | 1-year license revocation + ignition interlock required for 2 years on any motor vehicle you drive. Applies to blood, breath, saliva, or urine tests ( Express Consent Law C.R.S. 42-4-1301.1). |
| BAC 0.02%+ (under 21 Zero Tolerance) | 1st DUI/DWAI: license revocation if court-ordered evaluation/program not completed. 2nd or 3rd: mandatory revocation. Possession of alcohol under 21 = revocation even if not driving ( Driving Under the Influence). |
| CDL driver BAC | Revocation based on BAC over 0.04% for a CDL driver ( Driving Under the Influence). |
| 2nd / 3rd+ DWAI or DUI | 2nd: $600–$1,500, 10–365 days, 48–120 hrs CS, 1-year revocation. 3rd+: $600–$1,500, 60–365 days jail, 48–120 hrs CS, 2-year revocation. Revocations may run consecutively with other suspensions ( Table 1). |
School bus rules are heavily tested. In Colorado, stop at least 20 feet before a school bus with red lights flashing — both directions — and remain stopped until the lights stop flashing. You are NOT required to stop if a median or other physical barrier separates the bus from your vehicle ( Right-of-Way).
| Location | Minimum Clearance |
|---|---|
| Fire hydrant | 15 ft — Colorado parking clearance ( Parking) |
| Stop sign / yield sign / flashing signal / traffic control device | 30 ft — Colorado parking clearance ( Parking) |
| Pedestrian safety zone | Not allowed — no parking in pedestrian safety zones or on a crosswalk ( Parking) |
| Crosswalk at intersection | Not on a crosswalk — Colorado prohibits parking on any crosswalk or sidewalk ( Parking) |
| Railroad crossing | 30 ft — no parking within 30 ft of a railroad crossing ( Parking) |
| Fire station driveway / other driveway | No parking blocking any driveway (public or private) ( Parking) |
| Driveway entrance (public or private) | Not in front of — always prohibited |
| Accessible (disabled) parking space | Never without valid placard/plate — fine $350–$5,000, possible jail, loss of driving privileges, vehicle may be impounded. Using someone else's placard = jail + fines DOUBLED ( Pavement Markings). |
| Inside an intersection or on a crosswalk | Never — always illegal |
| Bridge, elevated structure, tunnel, on/off ramp, runaway truck ramp, controlled-access highway, bike lane | No parking anywhere on these ( Parking) |
| No Stopping zone | Never stop here, for any reason |
| No Parking zone | No parking — may stop to load/unload |
The rule: always turn wheels so that if the car rolls, it rolls away from traffic or is caught by the curb.
| Situation | Turn Wheels | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Facing DOWNHILL, WITH curb | RIGHT (into curb) | Car rolls into curb and stops |
| Facing DOWNHILL, NO curb | RIGHT (away from road) | Car rolls away from traffic |
| Facing UPHILL, WITH curb | LEFT (away from curb) | Car rolls back, caught by curb |
| Facing UPHILL, NO curb | RIGHT (away from road) | Car rolls away from traffic |
GDL questions appear on many tests. Know Colorado's Graduated Driver Licensing program, the restrictions in each phase, and the specific ages, hold periods, and curfew hours.
| Equipment | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Headlights (on) | From sunset to sunrise, OR whenever visibility is less than 1,000 feet. Parked vehicles alongside the road must also have parking lights on during the same window. Parking lights alone are not enough for driving ( Night Driving). |
| High beams (dim) | Dim within 500 ft of an oncoming vehicle. Dim within 200 ft when following another vehicle. In fog: use LOW beams or fog lights — high beams reflect off fog and reduce visibility ( Night Driving / Weather). |
| Horn | Use when needed to prevent a crash. Do NOT use to express anger, greet friends, or encourage others to move. Avoid around blind pedestrians and animal-drawn vehicles. |
| Turn signals | Continuous turn signal 100 ft before a turn or lane change in urban areas; 200 ft on 4-lane highways >40 mph. Minimum 3 seconds on. Signal must be canceled within 3 seconds of completing the turn or lane change. If your signals don't work, use hand signals ( Turning / Changing Lanes). |
| Tinted windows | Windshield and windows must not obstruct the driver's view. Specific VLT (visible light transmission) limits are set by CO regulation — confirm current numbers with CDOT / DMV. |
| TVs / video screens visible to driver | Prohibited while vehicle is in motion (navigation is typically excepted — confirm against Colorado manual). |
| Muffler | Must prevent excessive or unusual noise |
| Brakes | Vehicles must have working service brakes capable of stopping under control. Parking brake required. Test brakes lightly after driving through deep water to dry them out. |
| Wipers | Must adequately clean the windshield when used |
| Tail lights / rear reflector | Tail lights and rear reflectors are required equipment on all vehicles. Keep lenses clean for night-driving visibility. |
| Tires | Tire condition and tread composition directly affect stopping distance. Proper inflation and good tread are critical. |
| Hazard lights | For use when parked/stopped in an emergency — not while driving normally |
| Seat belts & child restraints | Driver, all front-seat passengers, and children under 16 must be restrained (primary enforcement). Child restraint thresholds: under 2 & under 40 lbs = rear-facing in rear seat; under 2 & 40+ lbs = rear- or forward-facing; 2 to under 4 & 20+ lbs = restraint in rear seat; 4 to under 9 & 40+ lbs = restraint or booster in rear seat; 9–18 = seat belt or restraint per manufacturer ( Seat Belt Laws). |
