🎯

What to Study Before the Real Test

The Colorado written test pulls most heavily from these topics. Read through each section below, memorize the numbers, then take the DMV Exam Simulator to test yourself. Aim for 90%+ in practice before you walk in.

Memorize these numbers first. Colorado test questions are frequently built around specific distances, speeds, BAC levels, and time periods. These come up constantly.

Speed Limits

HIGH FREQUENCY
25 / 30 mph
Default Colorado limits (unless otherwise posted): 25 mph business district, 30 mph residence district. Always obey posted limits.
School zones
Obey posted reduced limit. Fines are DOUBLED in active school zones. Watch for children crossing or near the road ( Construction Zones).
65–75 mph
Designated rural interstates and highways (where posted). Urban interstate: 55 mph. Open mountain highway: 40 mph. Narrow winding mountain highway: 20 mph ( Speed).
Posted
Speed limits are posted for ideal conditions. Drivers must reduce speed for rain, ice, heavy traffic, or any condition that makes the posted speed unsafe.
~200 ft
Per the National Safety Council (cited in ), a lightweight passenger car traveling at 55 mph can stop in about 200 feet under ideal conditions.
3-second rule
Colorado uses the three-second rule for following distance under normal conditions. Increase in rain, fog, snow, ice, or high winds ( Safe Driving Tips).
📏

Critical Distances & Clearances

HIGH FREQUENCY
15 ft
Do not park within 15 feet of a fire hydrant ( Parking)
Not on crosswalk
Do not park on any crosswalk, sidewalk, or inside an intersection ( Parking)
30 ft
Do not park within 30 feet of any traffic signal, stop sign, or railroad crossing ( Parking)
30 ft
Do not park within 30 feet of a railroad crossing ( Parking)
12 in
Parallel park: vehicle must be within 12 inches of the curb (or as close as possible to the shoulder edge) ( Parking)
Both headlights
After passing, return to your lane only when you can see BOTH headlights of the passed vehicle in your rearview mirror ( Passing)
500 / 200 ft
Dim high beams within 500 ft of an oncoming vehicle; within 200 ft when following another vehicle ( Night Driving)
1,000 ft
Headlights required from sunset to sunrise OR whenever visibility is less than 1,000 feet. Parked vehicles alongside the road must have parking lights on during the same window ( Night Driving).
100 / 200 ft
Signal continuously 100 ft before a turn or lane change in urban areas; 200 ft on 4-lane highways where the speed limit exceeds 40 mph. Minimum 3 seconds on ( Turning / Changing Lanes).
Primary
Colorado seat belt law: primary enforcement. Driver, front-seat passengers, and children under 16 must be restrained ( Seat Belt Laws).
3 ft min
When passing a bicyclist, Colorado requires at least 3 feet of clearance between the outermost part of your vehicle (mirrors/trailer included) and the cyclist ( Bicyclists).
Stop 20 ft
Stop at least 20 feet before a school bus with red lights flashing — both directions — until the lights stop flashing. Exception: median or other physical barrier separating the bus from your vehicle ( Right-of-Way).
🍺

DUI & Alcohol Numbers

ALWAYS ON TEST
0.05 / 0.08%
DWAI at BAC 0.05%; DUI per se at BAC 0.08% (drivers 21+). Colorado uses both charges based on impairment severity ( Driving Under the Influence).
0.02%
Under-21 Zero Tolerance: license revocation on 1st conviction if court-ordered program not completed. 2nd or 3rd: mandatory revocation. Possession of alcohol under 21 = revocation regardless of driving ( Driving Under the Influence).
9 months
1st DUI (BAC 0.08%+): 9-month license revocation, $600–$1,000 fine, 5–365 days jail, 48–96 hours community service. 1st DWAI (0.05%): $200–$500, 2–180 days jail, 24–48 hrs CS, 8 points ( Table 1).
Refusal
Colorado Express Consent (C.R.S. 42-4-1301.1): by operating a vehicle you have already agreed to a blood/breath/saliva/urine test. Refusal = 1-year revocation + 2 years of ignition interlock ( Driving Under the Influence).
No plea bargain
Colorado law does not allow plea bargaining out of an alcohol- or drug-related driving offense. Reinstatement fee amounts set by DMV — confirm at myDMV.Colorado.gov.
🎓

Teen / GDL Numbers

ON EXAM
Age 15
Instruction Permit at age 15 with driver education (or age 16 without). Hold permit for 12 months. Supervisor must be 21+ with a valid Colorado license in the front passenger seat ( Minor Drivers).
Age 16
Driver License at age 16 after 12 months with the Instruction Permit. First-year curfew: midnight–5 a.m. Minor-driver rules end at age 18 ( Minor Drivers).
Midnight–5 AM
First year of licensure (under 18): no driving midnight to 5 a.m. unless with an instructor, parent, or legal guardian. Exceptions: school/work with signed statement, medical emergencies, emancipated minors ( Minor Drivers).
0 → 1 → Unlimited
First 6 months of licensure: no passengers under 21 (parent/licensed adult exception). 6–12 months: 1 passenger under 21. After 1 year: as many as seat belts. Siblings and medical emergencies are exceptions ( Minor Drivers).
12 months
Under-18 applicants must hold their Instruction Permit for 12 months and complete a 50-hour driving log (10 hrs at night) before applying for a driver license ( Minor Drivers).
Age 18
All minor-driver rules end at age 18. Applicants under 16½ must also complete 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training with an approved driver education instructor ( Minor Drivers).
⏱️

Following Distance & Time Rules

ON EXAM
3 sec
Three-second rule under normal conditions. Watch the vehicle ahead pass a fixed reference point; count "one-one-thousand, two-one-thousand, three-one-thousand" ( Safe Driving Tips).
4+ sec
Increase following distance in rain, fog, snow, ice, high winds, night driving, or when following motorcycles and large trucks ( Weather).
~200 ft @ 55
Per NSC (cited in ), a lightweight passenger car at 55 mph can stop in about 200 ft under ideal conditions. Reaction time, tires, and brake condition all matter.
Hands-free
Colorado law prohibits manual use of a mobile device while driving (hands-free accessory OK). Texting while driving is banned outright. Exceptions: contacting law enforcement, fire department, or any emergency ( Safe Driving Tips).
🚦

Road signs are tested heavily. Know each sign's shape, color, and meaning. The real test often shows a sign description and asks what it means.

🔴

Sign Shapes — Each Shape Has One Meaning

ALWAYS TESTED
ShapeMeaningExample
Octagon (8-sided)STOP — always and onlyStop sign
Triangle (pointing down)YIELD — give right of wayYield sign
DiamondWARNING — hazard aheadCurve, pedestrian, deer

⚠️

Signs That Are Frequently Confused

TRICKY
!
No Passing Pennant vs. No U-Turn: The pennant (pointing right) = no passing. A circle with a slash over a U-turn arrow = no U-turn. Very different.
!
Crossbuck (RR) vs. Stop Sign: The crossbuck (white X) = yield/slow down and check. Only stop if a train is coming. The octagon = always stop.
!
Divided Highway Begins vs. Ends: Begins = two arrows pointing apart (median starts). Ends = two arrows merging together (median ends — expect two-way traffic).
!
Merge vs. Lane Ends: Merge = two roads joining (both cars adjust). Lane Ends = one lane disappears — that driver must yield and merge.
!
Red Circle with Slash: Always means that action is PROHIBITED. No left turn, no trucks, no bicycles — whatever is inside the circle is forbidden.

Right of way is the #1 failure topic on the DMV knowledge test. Master every scenario below — these questions will be on your exam.

The Core Right-of-Way Rules

MOST TESTED
1
Uncontrolled intersection — arrive at same time: Yield to the driver on your RIGHT. This is the most tested right-of-way rule.
2
Left turn at green light: You must always yield to oncoming traffic AND pedestrians — even with a green light. A green light is permission to go, not a guarantee of right of way.
3
Pedestrians in a crosswalk: Always yield. Stop and wait until the pedestrian has completely crossed — not just stepped back. This includes jaywalkers in many situations.
4
Blind pedestrian (white cane / guide dog): Absolute right of way — you must stop regardless of where they are crossing.
5
Four-way stop: First to arrive goes first. Simultaneous arrival = yield to the driver on your right. Straight traffic before turning traffic if both arrive at same time from opposite directions.
6
Emergency vehicles (lights + siren): Pull to the right edge of the road and stop. Clear intersections first — never stop IN an intersection.
7
Entering from driveway / private road: Always yield to all traffic on the public road — you have no right of way entering from private property.
8
Roundabout: Vehicles inside the roundabout always have right of way. Entering traffic must yield. When exiting, yield to pedestrians at the crosswalk.
9
Merging onto a highway: Traffic already on the highway has right of way. The merging vehicle must yield and find a safe gap.
10
Non-functioning traffic signal: Treat as an all-way stop. All drivers stop, yield, and take turns.
💡

Right-of-Way Scenarios That Trick People

TRICKY
!
Yellow light: It does NOT mean speed up. If you can stop safely, you must. Proceed only if stopping would be unsafe (you're too close to stop).
!
Already in intersection when light turns red: Complete the turn — you are committed. Other traffic must wait for you to clear.
!
Backing out of a driveway: The reversing vehicle always yields to street traffic. You have no right of way in reverse.
!
Funeral processions: Treat funeral escort vehicles displaying flashing lights the same as emergency vehicles — yield and do not attempt to pass or cut through the procession.
!
Right turn on red: Legal ONLY after a complete stop and yielding to ALL traffic and pedestrians. Rolling right on red is illegal.
!
Left on red: Legal ONLY when turning from a one-way street onto another one-way street — after a complete stop and yielding.
🚥

Traffic Signal Meanings

ALWAYS TESTED
SignalWhat You Must Do
Solid GREENProceed — but yield to traffic already in intersection
Solid YELLOWPrepare to stop if safe; proceed only if stopping would be dangerous
Solid REDStop completely; may turn right on red after stop and yield (unless posted)
GREEN ARROWProtected turn — oncoming traffic must stop. You may turn in the arrow's direction, but still yield to vehicles and pedestrians already in the intersection.
YELLOW ARROWProtected turn is ending — prepare to yield or stop
Flashing YELLOW ARROWUnprotected turn — you MAY turn but MUST yield to oncoming and pedestrians
Flashing REDTreat exactly like a STOP sign — stop, yield, proceed when safe
Flashing YELLOWCaution — slow down and proceed carefully. Do not need to stop.
RED + GREEN ARROWStop for through traffic; turn in direction of arrow only
Signal NOT workingTreat as ALL-WAY STOP — all traffic stops
🛣️

Lane Markings — Know Each One

ON EXAM
1
Broken yellow center line: Passing is permitted from your side when it is safe.
2
Solid yellow line on your side: No passing from your side of the road.
3
Double solid yellow: No passing in either direction.
4
White lines: Separate traffic going in the same direction. Broken = lane change ok. Solid = discouraged (but not always illegal).
5
Yellow lines: Separate traffic going in opposite directions.
6
Center left-turn lane (two-way turn lane): Use ONLY to prepare for and make a left turn. Never use as a travel or passing lane.
7
Yellow X over a lane: Lane is CLOSED — move to a lane with a green arrow immediately.
8
White stop line: Stop your front bumper at or behind this line at intersections and crosswalks.
↔️

Safe Lane Changing Procedure

STEP BY STEP
1
Check your mirrors — rearview and side mirror on the side you're moving to
2
Signal your intent — at least 100 feet before turning or changing lanes
3
Look over your shoulder — physically check the blind spot. Mirrors cannot see everything.
4
Change lanes gradually — smooth and controlled, not jerky
5
Cancel signal and adjust speed to match the lane's traffic flow
🚨

DUI questions appear on virtually every DMV knowledge test. Know the BAC levels, implied consent law, and penalties. Colorado uses "DUI" (Driving Under the Influence).

🍺

DUI Laws — The Numbers You Must Know

ALWAYS ON TEST
SituationConsequence
BAC 0.08%+ (driver 21+) = DUI per se1st DUI: $600–$1,000 fine, 5–365 days jail, 48–96 hrs community service, 9-month license revocation. 2nd: $600–$1,500, 10–365 days jail, 48–120 hrs CS, 1-year revocation. 3rd+: $600–$1,500, 60–365 days jail, 48–120 hrs CS, 2-year revocation ( Table 1).
BAC 0.05–0.079% (driver 21+) = DWAI1st DWAI: $200–$500 fine, 2–180 days jail, 24–48 hrs community service, 8 points ( Table 1).
Impairment below 0.05% or by drugsColorado convicts based on impaired driving behavior, Standardized Field Sobriety Tests, and totality of circumstance — not only BAC. Marijuana: permissible inference of DUI at 5 ng/ml THC in blood ( Driving Under the Influence).
Test refusal (Colorado Express Consent)Colorado's Express Consent Law (C.R.S. 42-4-1301.1): any driver has already agreed to blood/breath/saliva/urine testing. Refusal = 1-year license revocation + ignition interlock on any vehicle you drive for 2 years ( Driving Under the Influence).
BAC 0.02%+ (under 21 Zero Tolerance)1st DUI/DWAI: revocation if court-ordered evaluation/program not completed. 2nd or 3rd: mandatory revocation ( Driving Under the Influence).
Minor purchasing or possessing alcohol (under 21)Any driver under 21 convicted of buying or possessing alcohol is subject to driver license revocation — even if driving is not a factor ( Driving Under the Influence).
CDL driver BACRevocation for CDL driver with BAC over 0.04%. Open container of alcohol or marijuana in the passenger area of a vehicle on a public road is unlawful ( Driving Under the Influence).
💡

Critical DUI Facts to Remember

TESTED
1
Colorado Express Consent (C.R.S. 42-4-1301.1): When you operate a motor vehicle in Colorado, you have already agreed to take a chemical test of blood, breath, saliva, or urine when suspected of impairment. Refusal = 1-year license revocation + 2 years of ignition interlock on any vehicle you drive. Reinstatement fees set by DMV (myDMV.Colorado.gov).
2
Only TIME removes alcohol: Coffee, food, cold showers, and fresh air do NOT lower your BAC. On average, BAC drops by 0.015% per hour — nothing speeds this up ( Driving Under the Influence).
3
Impairment starts with the first drink: Judgment is the first driving ability affected. Colorado can convict of DUI or DWAI based on observed impairment, driving behavior, and Standardized Field Sobriety Tests — regardless of BAC level ( Driving Under the Influence).
4
Under-21 Zero Tolerance: BAC 0.02%+ under 21 triggers DUI/DWAI charges. 1st conviction: revocation if court-ordered program not completed. 2nd or 3rd: mandatory revocation. Possession of alcohol under 21 = revocation even if not driving ( Driving Under the Influence).
5
Mixing drugs and alcohol: Colorado data shows polydrug impairment (using two or more drugs simultaneously) is more common than impairment by any single drug other than alcohol — and more dangerous. Mixing may multiply effects ( Driving Under the Influence).
6
Cell phone / distracted driving: Colorado prohibits all drivers from using a handheld mobile device while driving, unless using a hands-free accessory or contacting law enforcement/fire/emergency. Texting while driving is banned outright ( Safe Driving Tips).
7
Drugs and driving: Driving while impaired by any drug — prescription, over-the-counter, illicit, or marijuana — is illegal. Marijuana: permissible inference of DUI at 5 ng/ml THC. Medical or legal prescriptions are not a defense if the substance impairs driving ( Driving Under the Influence).
🚌

School bus rules are heavily tested. In Colorado you must stop at least 20 feet before a school bus with red lights flashing — from both directions. You are NOT required to stop if a median or other physical barrier separates the bus from your vehicle ( Right-of-Way).

🚌

School Bus Stopping Rules

HEAVILY TESTED
1
Two-lane road / undivided road: All traffic in BOTH directions must stop at least 20 ft before a school bus displaying flashing red lights ( Right-of-Way).
2
Colorado exception — when you do NOT need to stop: You are NOT required to stop if a median or other physical barrier separates the bus from your vehicle ( Right-of-Way).
3
Same direction — always stop: Traffic traveling in the same direction as the bus must always stop at least 20 ft before the bus, regardless of road type or number of lanes ( Right-of-Way).
4
After the bus stops: Remain stopped until the red lights are no longer flashing. Carefully watch for children near the bus and crossing the roadway before proceeding ( Right-of-Way).
5
When may you proceed: Only when the red lights stop flashing. The bus driver will deactivate the red lights once loading/unloading is complete ( Right-of-Way).
6
Yellow lights = warning: Yellow flashing = bus is about to stop. Slow down immediately and prepare to stop. Do not try to pass before it stops.
7
One of the most tested topics: Remember Colorado's key rule — 20 ft stopping distance, both directions, UNLESS a median or other physical barrier separates you from the bus ( Right-of-Way).
8
School buses must stop at ALL railroad crossings — regardless of whether warning signals are active. This is federal law.
9
Illegal to pass: It is illegal and dangerous to not stop when a school bus has its stop lights on and stop arm extended. Colorado enforces serious penalties — consult CDOT / Colorado DMV for current fines and point values.
10
Watch for students on or near the roadway: Always be alert for children who may dart from behind the bus to reach their destination ( Right-of-Way).

Speed Laws — What You Must Know

ON EVERY TEST
1
Basic Speed Law: Drive at a speed that is reasonable and proper for existing conditions — even if that means going below the posted limit. Rain, fog, heavy traffic, school zones all require reduced speed.
2
Posted limits are MAXIMUMS: You may never legally exceed a posted limit, regardless of conditions, traffic, or what other drivers are doing.
3
Minimum speed law: Do not drive so slowly that you impede or block the normal flow of traffic. Driving too slowly is also illegal.
4
Work zone caution: Reduce speed in work zones. Colorado DOUBLES fines in work zones and school zones ( Construction Zones).
5
"Over-driving your headlights": Colorado requires headlights from sunset to sunrise OR whenever visibility is less than 1,000 feet. Never drive faster than you can stop within the distance your headlights illuminate ( Night Driving).
6
Three-Second Rule: Colorado uses the 3-second rule. Pick a fixed reference point ahead; when the vehicle in front passes it, count "one-one-thousand, two-one-thousand, three-one-thousand." If you pass the point before you finish, you're too close ( Safe Driving Tips).
↔️

Following Distance — The 3-Second Rule

TESTED
1
Pick a fixed object — a sign, overpass, or lane marking ahead
2
When the car ahead passes it, start counting: "one-one-thousand, two-one-thousand, three-one-thousand"
3
If you pass the object before 3 seconds — you are following too closely. Slow down and increase the gap. In rain, fog, snow, ice, or high winds, increase to 4+ seconds ( Safe Driving Tips).

💡 When to increase beyond 3 seconds

  • Rain, snow, ice, or fog → 4 seconds minimum
  • Driving at night → increase beyond 3 seconds
  • Following a large truck or motorcycle → 4+ seconds
  • Towing a trailer → 4 seconds minimum
  • Driving at highway speeds → increase distance proportionally
📐

Passing Rules

TESTED
You MAY pass when: There is a broken yellow line on your side, you have sufficient sight distance, and there is no sign or condition prohibiting passing.
NEVER pass: Within 100 ft of any intersection or railroad crossing. Within 100 ft of any bridge, viaduct, or tunnel when view is obstructed. On a curve or hill where view is obstructed. In any marked no-passing zone (solid yellow on your side). A school bus with flashing red lights and stop arm extended. Or if you can't safely return to the right before coming within 200 ft of an oncoming vehicle ( Passing).
When it is safe to return: You may move back into your original lane when both headlights of the passed vehicle are visible in your rearview mirror.
Passing on the right: Legal when the vehicle ahead is making a left turn and there is a safe lane to the right, or on a multi-lane road.
🅿️

Parking Clearance Requirements

TESTED
LocationMinimum Clearance
Fire hydrant15 ft — do not park within 15 feet of a fire hydrant ( Parking)
Stop sign / traffic signal / railroad crossing30 ft — do not park within 30 feet of these ( Parking)
Crosswalk / sidewalk / bridge / tunnelNever — always prohibited ( Parking)
Intersection / tunnel / runaway truck ramp / on-off rampNever — always prohibited ( Parking)
Railroad crossing30 ft — do not park within 30 feet of a railroad crossing ( Parking)
Driveway (public or private)Never — Colorado prohibits parking that blocks any driveway ( Parking)
Driveway entrance (public or private)Not in front of — always prohibited
Accessible (disabled) spaceNever without a valid placard/plate — fine $350–$5,000, possible jail, loss of driving privileges, vehicle may be impounded. Using someone else's placard = jail + fines doubled ( Pavement Markings).
Inside an intersection or on a crosswalkNever — always illegal
Handicapped space (without placard)Never park here
Bike laneNever — Colorado prohibits driving, idling, or parking in a bike lane ( Lane Controls)
No Stopping zoneNever stop here, for any reason
No Parking zoneNo parking — may stop to load/unload
⛰️

Parking on Hills — Wheel Position

TRICK QUESTION
💡

The rule: always turn wheels so that if the car rolls, it rolls away from traffic or is caught by the curb.

SituationTurn WheelsWhy
Facing DOWNHILL, WITH curbRIGHT (into curb)Car rolls into curb and stops
Facing DOWNHILL, NO curbRIGHT (away from road)Car rolls away from traffic
Facing UPHILL, WITH curbLEFT (away from curb)Car rolls back, caught by curb
Facing UPHILL, NO curbRIGHT (away from road)Car rolls away from traffic

💡 Memory trick

  • Going downhill with a curb = wheels RIGHT into the curb
  • Going uphill with a curb = wheels LEFT, away from curb (tire catches it when rolling back)
  • No curb either way = wheels RIGHT, away from road
🎓

GDL questions appear on many tests. Know Colorado's Graduated Driver Licensing program, the restrictions in each phase, and the specific ages, hold periods, and curfew hours.

🎓

Colorado Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL)

ON EXAM
Minimum age: 15 (with driver education) or 16 without. Applicants under 18 must submit a signed Affidavit of Liability (DR2460) from a parent, stepparent, grandparent with power of attorney, legal guardian, spouse older than 18, or other responsible adult ( Minor Drivers).
If the signer of the Affidavit of Liability withdraws their signature, the permit or license is canceled. Minors in foster care may be exempt under specific conditions (see DMV.Colorado.gov/foster-children-driver-licenses).
Supervisor: a person 21 years or older who has a valid Colorado license must be in the front passenger seat while the permit holder is driving ( Getting A Driver License).
Must hold Instruction Permit at least 12 months before applying for a driver license, with a 50-hour driving log (10 at night). All Colorado drivers are subject to the hands-free law and texting ban ( Minor Drivers / Safe Driving Tips).
Eligibility: age 16+, Instruction Permit held for at least 12 months, 50-hour signed driving log (10 at night). Applicants under 16½ must complete 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training with an approved driver education instructor ( Minor Drivers).
First-year restrictions (under 18): First 6 months of licensure = no passengers under 21 unless a parent or licensed adult is present. 6–12 months = 1 passenger under 21. Curfew first year = no driving midnight–5 a.m. unless accompanied by instructor/parent/legal guardian (school/work/medical exceptions). Siblings and medical emergencies exempt. Hands-free law applies ( Minor Drivers).
Restrictions end after 1 year of licensure, and all minor-driver rules end at age 18. License validity and fee set by Colorado DMV — confirm at myDMV.Colorado.gov.
Time-based passenger and curfew restrictions are lifted after 1 year of licensure. All minor-driver rules end at age 18. New Colorado residents have 30 days to obtain a Colorado license once they meet residency criteria ( Getting A Driver License).
Adult (18+) applicants without a prior Colorado license need documents proving identity, lawful presence, Social Security number, and Colorado residency. Knowledge, vision, and drive tests may be required unless transferring a current out-of-state license (DMV.Colorado.gov/documents).
Statewide: Colorado law prohibits manual use of a mobile device while driving (hands-free OK) and bans texting while driving outright — all drivers, all ages ( Safe Driving Tips).
🛡️

Emergency Situations — What to Do

TESTED
💨
Tire blowout: Hold the wheel FIRMLY. Ease off gas (don't brake suddenly). Let the car slow naturally. Then gently steer to safety. Sudden braking causes a spin.
💧
Hydroplaning: Ease off gas, hold wheel steady, avoid braking. Let tires re-contact the road. Don't jerk the wheel or brake hard.
🔥
Engine fire: Pull over immediately, turn off engine, get EVERYONE out and move far away (100+ feet). Call 911. Never open the hood.
Brakes fail: Pump brakes rapidly to build pressure. Downshift to use engine braking. Use parking brake carefully (gradually). Steer to safety.
🌊
Accelerator sticks: Shift to NEUTRAL immediately. Apply brakes. Pull over. Turn engine off.
🌀
Vehicle skids: Ease off gas and brakes. Steer in the direction you want the front to go (into the skid). Do not overcorrect.
🚂
Stalled on railroad tracks: Get EVERYONE out IMMEDIATELY. Move away at a 45° angle in the direction the train is coming — so debris flies away from you. Call 911 and the railroad ENS number.
🌫️
Driving in fog: Use LOW beams (high beams reflect off fog and blind you). Slow significantly. Use fog lights if available. Consider pulling over.
😴
Drowsy driving: Only cure = sleep. Pull over and rest. Coffee, window down, and music are NOT effective solutions. Drowsy driving equals drunk driving in impairment level.
❄️
Stranded in a blizzard: Stay in the vehicle (it's shelter and visible). Run engine briefly for heat with window cracked to prevent CO poisoning. Signal for help with hazards.
🧠

Defensive Driving Principles

ESSENTIAL
1
Scan ahead: Look at least 10 seconds ahead (city: about one block; open road: about half a mile). Check your rearview mirror every 5 to 8 seconds and whenever slowing, changing lanes, or approaching intersections ( Safe Driving Tips).
2
Keep an escape route: Always know where you could go if the car ahead stopped suddenly.
3
Bridges freeze first: Cold air circulates above AND below a bridge. Bridges ice before road surface — always treat them as potentially icy in winter.
4
Head-on collision approaching: Brake hard and steer RIGHT — even off the road. A head-on crash at speed is almost always fatal; going off-road is survivable.
5
Road rage: Never engage, retaliate, or make eye contact. Don't respond with gestures. Slow down, create distance. Report to 911 if dangerous.
6
Front wheel off pavement: Don't jerk the wheel — it can roll the car. Ease off gas, brake gently, and gradually steer back. Hold on tight.

Headlights (on)From sunset to sunrise OR whenever visibility is less than 1,000 feet. Parked vehicles alongside the road must also have parking lights on during the same window. Parking lights alone are NOT enough for driving ( Night Driving).
High beams (dim)Dim within 500 ft of an oncoming vehicle; within 200 ft when following another vehicle. In fog: use LOW beams or fog lights — high beams reflect off fog and reduce visibility ( Night Driving / Weather).
HornCheck regularly. Use when needed to prevent a crash. Do NOT sound close to bicyclists unless an immediate crash risk exists — the horn may startle a cyclist and cause a crash ( Before You Drive / Bicyclists).
Turn signalsSignal continuously 100 ft before a turn or lane change in urban areas; 200 ft on 4-lane highways where the speed limit exceeds 40 mph. Minimum 3 seconds. Cancel within 3 seconds of completing the maneuver. If turn signals are broken, use hand signals ( Turning / Changing Lanes).
Tinted windows / windshieldWindshield and windows must not obstruct the driver's view. Damaged glass must be replaced. Keep windows clean inside and out. Specific VLT limits are set by CO regulation — confirm with CDOT / DMV.
TVs / video screens visible to driverProhibited while vehicle is in motion (navigation is excepted)
MufflerMust prevent excessive or unusual noise
BrakesService brakes must stop the vehicle under control. Parking brake required. If brakes do not seem to be working properly, have a mechanic check them immediately ( Before You Drive).
WipersMust adequately clean the windshield when used
Tail lights / rear reflectorTail lights and rear reflectors are required. Keep lenses clean. Make sure turn signals, brake lights, tail lights, and headlights all work before driving ( Before You Drive).
TiresWorn or bald tires increase stopping distance, cause hydroplaning on wet roads, and increase flat-tire risk. Check tread depth regularly. In winter, chains, snow tires, or alternative traction devices are preferable and may be required on highways under CDOT chain laws ( Before You Drive / Snow and Ice).
Hazard lightsFor use when parked/stopped in an emergency — not while driving normally
Seat belts & child restraintsDriver, all front-seat passengers, and children under 16 must be restrained — primary enforcement. Child restraint thresholds: under 2 & under 40 lbs = rear-facing in rear seat; under 2 & 40+ lbs = rear- or forward-facing; 2 to under 4 & 20+ lbs = restraint in rear seat; 4 to under 9 & 40+ lbs = restraint or booster in rear seat; 9–18 = seat belt or restraint per manufacturer ( Seat Belt Laws).
💡

Headlight Rules That Are Tested

TESTED
1
Headlights required by Colorado law: From sunset to sunrise OR whenever visibility is less than 1,000 feet ( Night Driving).
2
Parking lights ≠ headlights: Parking lights are for indicating a parked vehicle. Colorado law does not permit driving with only parking lights on. Parked vehicles alongside the road must have parking lights on from sunset to sunrise or whenever visibility is less than 1,000 ft ( Night Driving).
3
Dim high beams: Within 500 ft of an oncoming vehicle. Within 200 ft when following another vehicle. In fog, rain, or snow: use LOW beams or fog lights — high beams reflect off droplets ( Night Driving / Weather).
4
Night driving — "drive in your headlights": Never drive faster than you can stop within the distance lit by your headlights. Drop your sight below the glare of an approaching vehicle's headlights and use the painted edge lines to guide you ( Night Driving).

Before the Test — What to Do

PREPARATION
1
Take the DMV Exam Simulator at least 5 times and score 90%+ consistently. Don't go in when you're scoring 80% — aim higher than the minimum.
2
Use the "Weak Spots" mode the night before. Every question you got wrong — review those explanations until you understand WHY, not just what the answer is.
3
Memorize the Key Numbers tab — BAC limits, distances, suspension periods, speed limits. These are direct exam fodder.
4
Get a good night's sleep. Drowsy test-taking impairs recall just like drowsy driving impairs reaction time.
5
Bring required documents: Proof of identity and lawful presence; proof of Social Security number; two documents proving Colorado residency; signed Affidavit of Liability (DR2460) for minors; proof of any required behind-the-wheel training. Bring glasses or contacts if you have a corrective-lens restriction. Full list at DMV.Colorado.gov/documents.
🧠

During the Test — How to Answer

STRATEGY
1
The safest answer is usually correct. When in doubt, pick the option that is most cautious, most yields, or stops the most. Colorado tests reward safe, defensive driving choices.
2
Watch for "NEVER" and "ALWAYS" options. These are sometimes traps — but in Colorado driving law, there actually are many absolute rules (ALWAYS stop for school bus, NEVER pass on a hill crest, etc.).
3
"All of the above" is very often the correct answer on DMV knowledge tests — especially for questions about DUI charges, suspension triggers, and violations.
4
Read every word. Test questions often hinge on words like "divided highway" vs. "undivided," "business district" vs. "residential," or "first offense" vs. "subsequent offense."
5
Refusing a BAC test — can cost your license. Colorado's Express Consent Law (C.R.S. 42-4-1301.1) automatically revokes your license for 1 year and requires ignition interlock for 2 years on any vehicle you drive. Refusal can be used as evidence at trial ( Driving Under the Influence).
6
The real Colorado DMV knowledge test: About 25 questions; 80% to pass (about 20 of 25 correct); single section, not separated by road signs. No official time limit. Practice quizzes on the myColorado app. Handbook does not state exact question count — confirm at myDMV.Colorado.gov.

Right of way at intersections — especially uncontrolled, four-way stops, and left turns at green lights
2
DUI laws — BAC limits, suspension periods, refusing vs. failing the test
3
Road signs — shapes, colors, and what specific signs mean
4
School bus stopping rules — Stop at least 20 ft before a school bus with red lights flashing, both directions; you are NOT required to stop if a median or physical barrier separates the bus from your vehicle ( Right-of-Way).
5
Speed limits — Business district: 25 mph. Residence district: 30 mph. Urban interstate: 55 mph. Rural interstate: 65–75 mph. Open mountain highway: 40 mph. Narrow winding mountain highway: 20 mph. Always obey the posted sign ( Speed).
6
Traffic signals — flashing red vs. yellow, green arrow vs. regular green, non-working signals

DMV Written Test · Recommended Study Approach

The Smartest Way
to Pass Your Test

A proven 4-phase approach that builds real understanding — not just memorization. Work through each phase at your own pace, and you'll walk into the DMV ready to pass on your first try.

📱 Uses This App 🎯 25 Qs · 80% to Pass 🧠 4 Phases · Your Pace ✅ 90%+ Before You Go

⚡ How This Approach Works

🧠
Learn before you quiz. Read the material first so practice questions teach you patterns — not just random answers.
🎯
Fix what's weak, skip what's strong. The app tracks every wrong answer. Spend your time where it matters most.
📈
Build up gradually. Numbers → Study Guide → Practice → Topics → Simulator. Each phase builds on the last.
🏁
Don't go until you're ready. Score 90%+ on the simulator twice before visiting the DMV. On a 25-question Colorado test you can miss up to 5 (80% pass) — but aim for 90%+ to be safe.
🧠 Phase 1 Learn — Build Your Foundation
🔢
Step 1 · Start Here
Memorize the Key Numbers
Study Guide → 🔢 Key Numbers tab · then take the Key Numbers Quiz
⏱ 30–40 min
1
Click in the top bar → open the tab.
2
Read every number out loud. Speed limits, distances, BAC limits, suspension periods. Saying them out loud forces your brain to process them more deeply.
3
Write these on paper: 25 mph business · 30 mph residence · 55 mph urban interstate · 65–75 mph rural · 0.05% DWAI · 0.08% DUI · 0.02% under-21 · 100 ft signal urban · 200 ft signal hwy · 500 ft dim beams · 200 ft follow-dim · 1,000 ft headlight visibility · 15 ft hydrant · 30 ft stop/RR · 12 in parallel · 3-second rule · $600–$1,000 (1st DUI) · 9-month DUI revocation · 1-year refusal revocation + 2-year interlock
4
Go home → click . Take it without your notes. Check your score.
5
Under 85%? Re-read the Key Numbers tab, then retake the quiz. Repeat until you hit 85%+.
💡
Why numbers first? A meaningful share of real knowledge test questions ask for a specific number. These are free points if you know them — and guaranteed wrong answers if you don't.
📖
Step 2 · The Big 4 Topics
Read the 4 Most-Tested Study Tabs
Study Guide → Right of Way · Alcohol & DUI · Road Signs · Signals & Lanes
⏱ 40–50 min
1
— read completely. This is the #1 failure topic. Understand left turns at green lights and Colorado's school bus rule (stop at least 20 ft before the bus from both directions, unless a median or physical barrier separates your vehicle from the bus) ( Right-of-Way).
2
— key facts: BAC 0.08%+ = DUI (0.05% = DWAI); 1st DUI: $600–$1,000, 5–365 days jail, 9-month revocation. Under 21 = 0.02% Zero Tolerance. Refusing chemical test: 1-year revocation + 2-year ignition interlock. No plea bargain allowed for DUI/DWAI.
3
— shapes and colors tables. Octagon = stop, triangle down = yield, diamond = warning, pentagon = school zone, pennant = no passing.
4
— flashing red vs. yellow, green arrow vs. regular green, right-on-red rules (must make complete stop first, yield to pedestrians and traffic).
ℹ️
Don't try to memorize every word. Focus on understanding WHY each rule exists. When you understand the reasoning, you can figure out answers even when questions are worded differently from what you studied.
📖
Step 3 · The Rest of the Guide
Read the Remaining Study Tabs
School Buses · Parking · Teen Laws · Speed & Following · Safe Driving · Equipment
⏱ 30–40 min
1
— Stop at least 20 ft before a school bus with red lights flashing, from both directions. Exception: you are NOT required to stop if a median or other physical barrier separates the bus from your vehicle ( Right-of-Way). Always on the test.
2
— memorize the 4 hill parking scenarios. Trick: no curb = always turn wheels right.
3
— Colorado GDL: Instruction Permit at 15 (w/ DE) or 16 (hold 12 months, 50-hr log) → Driver License at 16 (first-year curfew midnight–5 a.m., phased passenger restrictions) → Minor-driver rules end at age 18 ( Minor Drivers).
4
— following distance rule, passing rules, and when to increase your following distance. Know the stopping distances from Colorado Driver Handbook (December 2024).
5
— hydroplaning, blowout, skid recovery, fog driving. Understand the logic — don't memorize.
6
— Headlights required sunset to sunrise or visibility < 1,000 ft. Dim high beams within 500 ft of oncoming; low beams when following within 200 ft ( Night Driving).
Pro tip: If you want even deeper detail, download the 📕 Official Colorado Driver Handbook (December 2024) → for the full official content. The study guide gives you the highlights, the manual gives you everything.
Take a real break here. Sleep on it if you can — your brain consolidates memory overnight. Phase 2 works best after at least a few hours (or a night) away from studying.
📝 Phase 2 Practice — Test Yourself
📚
Step 4 · First Practice Run
Full Practice Bank — Work Through 60–100 Questions
Home → 📚 Full Practice Bank · no timer, read every explanation
⏱ 45–60 min
1
Click . This gives you all 500+ questions in random order with no timer.
2
Read every explanation — even when you get it right. The explanations contain extra detail and reasoning that will help you on tricky test questions.
3
Do at least 60–100 questions. The app automatically saves every wrong answer so you can drill them later.
4
Click See Results when done. Note which categories you failed most — those are the targets for Phase 3.
ℹ️
Getting things wrong is the point. This is a learning session, not an exam. Every wrong answer you discover now is one you'll get right on test day.
🏆
Step 5 · Topic Deep-Dives
Practice Your 3 Weakest Categories
Home → Choose Your Practice Mode → pick Full Practice Bank or Quick Drill
⏱ 30–40 min
1
Look at your results from Step 4. Find the 3 categories where you got the most wrong (e.g., Right of Way, DUI, Road Signs).
2
Use the Study Guide to review your weak topics, then run the Full Practice Bank or Quick Drill to test yourself on all categories.
3
Repeat for your 2nd and 3rd weakest topics. Focused drilling is much more efficient than random practice.
4
Target: 80%+ on each topic. Under 80%? Go back to the Study Guide tab for that topic, re-read it, then retake.
🎯 Phase 3 Fix — Attack Your Weak Spots
🎯
Step 6 · The Most Important Step
Weak Spots Mode — Drill Every Wrong Answer
Home → 🎯 Weak Spots Only · the app loads your mistakes automatically
⏱ 30–45 min
1
Click . The app loads every question you've gotten wrong so far — automatically.
2
Before you answer — think about why each option might be right or wrong. Slow down and reason through it.
3
Still don't understand an answer? Open the Study Guide tab for that topic and re-read just that section. Or download the official manual for the full official explanation.
4
Retake Weak Spots until you score 85%+ on it. 2–3 rounds is completely normal — that's exactly how this is supposed to work.
This is the single most valuable thing you can do. Research shows that practicing things you got wrong is 3–5x more effective than re-reading material you already know. Don't skip this step.
Take a break. At least 30 minutes. Let your brain rest before the simulation phase.
🏁 Phase 4 Prove It — Simulate the Real Test
📋
Step 7 · The Big Test
DMV Exam Simulator — Full Simulation
Home → 📋 DMV Exam Simulator · 25 questions · no timer (Colorado has no official time limit)
⏱ 20–30 min
1
Click . 25 random questions, no timer (Colorado has no published time limit), need 80% to pass (about 20 correct).
2
Treat it like the real thing. No notes. No Study Guide. Sit quietly, read every question fully, and give your best answer.
3
Check your score against the table below and follow the action for your result.
Your ScoreStatusWhat to Do Next
Under 75%Needs more workGo back to Phase 3 — run Weak Spots mode on your wrong answers. Re-read the Study Guide for those topics. Then try the simulator again.
75% – 89%Almost thereRun Weak Spots on what you missed, then take the simulator again. You're close — one more round should get you there.
90%+Ready! 🎉Run the simulator one more time to confirm. Score 90%+ twice → you are ready for the real test.
🔁
Step 8 · Repeat Until 90%+
Fix → Retest → Confirm
Retry Wrong Ones → DMV Simulator → repeat until you pass twice in a row
⏱ 30–45 min per cycle
1
From the results screen click . Drill every question you got wrong in the simulator.
2
For any question you still don't understand — open the Study Guide, find the right section, and re-read that rule. Or download the official manual for the full explanation.
3
Run the again. Keep going until you hit 90%+ twice in a row.
The magic number is 90% twice. If you can score 90% on random questions under timed conditions two times in a row, you know the material — not just the specific questions.
🌙 Night Before Refresh — Don't Cram
🌙
Final Review — 20 Minutes Max
Quick Refresh, Then Sleep
Key Numbers tab + Test-Day Tips tab only · No new material
⏱ 20 min max
1
Open tab in the Study Guide. Read through once — don't study, just refresh.
2
Open the tab. Read the strategy section — especially "safest answer wins" and the Implied Consent rule for DUI refusal.
3
Take one as a confidence check. Score 80%+? Close the app and go to sleep. You're ready.
4
Go to sleep at your normal time. Being well-rested is worth more than another hour of studying.
⚠️
Do NOT cram the night before. Your brain needs sleep to consolidate everything you've learned. More than an hour of study at this point actually hurts performance.

🏁 Test Day Checklist

Frequently Asked Questions

How many questions are on the Colorado permit test?

The Colorado DMV knowledge test typically includes about 25 questions and a passing score of 80% (about 20 of 25 correct). Question count is not stated in the handbook — confirm the current format at myDMV.Colorado.gov.

What does DUI mean in Colorado?

Colorado uses two impaired-driving charges: DUI (Driving Under the Influence) at BAC 0.08%+ and DWAI (Driving While Ability Impaired) at BAC 0.05%+. Under 21 = 0.02% Zero Tolerance. CDL = 0.04%. Marijuana: permissible inference of DUI at 5 ng/ml THC ( Driving Under the Influence).

What is Colorado's following distance rule?

Colorado uses the three-second rule under normal conditions. Pick a fixed reference point ahead; when the vehicle in front passes it, count "one-one-thousand, two-one-thousand, three-one-thousand." If you pass the point before you finish, you're too close. Increase to 4+ seconds in rain, fog, snow, ice, high winds, and when following motorcycles or large trucks ( Safe Driving Tips / Weather).

What is the minimum age for a Colorado learner's permit?

The Colorado Instruction Permit can be obtained at age 15 (with driver education) or age 16 without. Minors must hold the permit for 12 months and log 50 hours of supervised driving (10 at night) before applying for a driver license at 16 ( Minor Drivers).

Is the Colorado permit test free to practice?

Yes, this practice site is completely free. Every question is verified against the Colorado Driver Handbook (December 2024).

What is the emergency number on Colorado highways?

Colorado provides DMV online services at myDMV.Colorado.gov. For roadside emergencies, dial 911. Light-rail incidents: RTD at 303-299-6000. Organ donor questions: Donor Alliance at 303-329-4747 or 1-888-868-4747.

What Makes the Colorado Written Test Different

Colorado is one of the only states in the country with two separate impaired-driving charges: DUI at 0.08% BAC and DWAI (Driving While Ability Impaired) starting at 0.05% BAC. Colorado also has a permissible inference of DUI at 5 nanograms of THC per milliliter in blood — a rule almost no other state writes into its handbook. The written knowledge test is administered by the Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) at driver license offices, and the Colorado Driver Handbook (December 2024) is the exam's source of truth. Refusing a chemical test under Colorado's Express Consent Law (C.R.S. 42-4-1301.1) automatically revokes your license for 1 year and requires ignition interlock on any vehicle you drive for 2 years — no plea bargain is allowed.

Every fact on this page is verified against the Colorado Driver Handbook (December 2024) published by the Colorado DMV. The most-tested Colorado facts: BAC thresholds — 0.05% DWAI, 0.08% DUI per se, 0.02% Zero Tolerance for drivers under 21, 0.04% CDL. Turn signal: 100 ft before a turn or lane change in urban areas, 200 ft on 4-lane highways where the speed limit exceeds 40 mph, minimum 3 seconds on. Following distance: 3-second rule under normal conditions. School bus: stop at least 20 ft before the bus, both directions — unless a median or other physical barrier separates you. Parking: 15 ft fire hydrant, 30 ft stop sign/signal/RR, 12 inches parallel. Headlights: sunset–sunrise or visibility < 1,000 ft; dim within 500 ft oncoming, 200 ft following. 1st-DUI penalties: $600–$1,000, 5–365 days jail, 48–96 hrs community service, 9-month license revocation ( Table 1).

Colorado's minor-driver program has two key stages: an Instruction Permit available at age 15 (with driver education) or 16 (without), and a Driver License at age 16. An under-18 applicant needs an Affidavit of Liability (DR2460) signed by a parent, stepparent, grandparent with power of attorney, legal guardian, spouse older than 18, or other responsible adult. While holding the permit, a person 21 or older with a valid Colorado license must be in the front passenger seat. Colorado requires the permit be held 12 months, with a signed driving log showing 50 hours of driving (10 at night) and, if under 16½, 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training with an approved instructor. In the first year of licensure: no passengers under 21 for 6 months (parent/licensed-adult exception), then 1 passenger under 21 for the next 6 months. First-year curfew: midnight to 5 a.m. unless accompanied by an instructor, parent, or legal guardian (school/work/medical exceptions; emancipated minors exempt). All minor-driver rules end at age 18.

This free practice test is verified against the Colorado Driver Handbook (December 2024) and is built for anyone testing at DMV driver license offices in Denver, Colorado Springs, Aurora, Fort Collins, Lakewood, Thornton, Arvada, Westminster, Pueblo, Boulder, Greeley, and Grand Junction, and every other Colorado location. Appointments are scheduled through myDMV.Colorado.gov; fees are set by the Colorado DMV and are listed on the same site. New Colorado residents have 30 days to obtain a Colorado license after becoming a resident. Free practice here, no signup, no paywall, and every fact on this page is traceable back to the handbook.
