How many questions are on the Florida FLHSMV Class E knowledge test?
The Florida Class E Knowledge Exam is 50 multiple-choice questions about Florida traffic laws, safe driving practices, and identifying traffic controls. You need to answer at least 80% correctly (40 of 50) to pass.
What is the passing score for the Florida Class E written test?
You must score at least 80%, which means answering 40 of 50 questions correctly. The written re-test fee is $10 per attempt.
What happens if I fail the Florida knowledge test?
You may return to retest after studying. The written re-test fee is $10. The driving-skills re-test fee is $20. There is no statewide fixed waiting period — call your local driver license service center (or visit flhsmv.gov/locations) to schedule a retake.
What is the minimum age for a Florida learner's license?
15 years old. You must pass the Vision and Class E Knowledge exams and complete the Traffic Law & Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE) course. Applicants under 18 need a parent or legal guardian to sign the parental-consent form, and must be in compliance with school-attendance requirements.
What are the Florida GDL restrictions for minors?

What is Florida's Zero Tolerance law for drivers under 21?
Any driver under 21 stopped by law enforcement with a Blood Alcohol Level (BAL) of .02 or higher has their driving privilege automatically suspended for 6 months (1st offense). BAL of .05 or higher also requires completion of a substance-abuse course. Parents or legal guardians are notified of results for all drivers under 19.
What is the legal BAL (Blood Alcohol Level) limit in Florida?

What are the minimum auto insurance requirements in Florida?
Florida requires a minimum of $10,000 Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and $10,000 Property Damage Liability (PDL) coverage from a company licensed in Florida. After a DUI conviction, you must carry $100,000 BIL per person / $300,000 BIL per accident / $50,000 PDL for 3 years. Failure to maintain insurance can suspend your license and plate for up to 3 years; reinstatement fees range from $150 to $500.
When must I stop for a stopped school bus in Florida?
On a two-way street or highway, ALL drivers in BOTH directions must stop when a bus displays its stop signal. The only exception: the highway is divided by a raised barrier or an unpaved median at least 5 feet wide — then only opposite-direction traffic is exempt. Painted lines and pavement markings are NOT barriers. Penalty for passing: min $265 ($465 if on the side children enter/exit), 4 points, mandatory Basic Driver Improvement course.
Can I turn left on a red light in Florida?
Yes — but only from a one-way street onto another one-way street that has traffic moving to the left, after a complete stop and yielding to pedestrians and oncoming traffic. Right on red is also allowed after a complete stop and yield — unless a NO TURN ON RED sign is posted.
Is texting while driving illegal in Florida?
Yes. It is illegal to operate a motor vehicle while texting in Florida. Additionally, Florida law prohibits any handheld wireless device use in a designated school crossing, school zone, or work zone. Texting is 3 points on your record; +3 in a school zone; +6 if it results in a crash.
How do I renew my Florida driver license?
Florida Class E licenses are valid 6 to 8 years. Renewal is $48. US citizens and immigrants may renew online at MyDMVPortal.flhsmv.gov (not eligible if your previous renewal was by phone/mail/online). Drivers 80+ must pass a vision exam at every renewal. Late renewal (after your birthday midnight) adds a $15 delinquent fee. Notify FLHSMV of an address change within 30 days and a name change within 48 hours of the change.
