Sign Shapes โ Each Shape Has One Meaning
This is the most important thing to memorize. Even if you forget a specific sign, knowing the shape tells you what category it belongs to.

Memory trick: "Red means dead" (stop/danger). Yellow means "yell caution." Orange means "oh! construction." Green means "go this direction."

Regulatory Signs (Must Obey)
- Stop โ red octagon; come to a complete stop before the line.

Warning Signs (Yellow Diamond)
- Curve Ahead โ curved arrow showing direction; slow down before the curve.
- Curve with Side Road โ T-curve arrow; intersection within a curve ahead.
- Intersection Ahead โ cross symbol; prepare for a crossing road.
- Merge โ two lanes becoming one; yield to traffic in the main lane.
- Lane Reduction โ right lane ends ahead; merge left early.
- Two-Way Traffic โ opposing arrows; divided road ends, watch for oncoming traffic.
- Divided Highway Begins โ median starts ahead; keep right of the barrier.
- Divided Highway Ends โ two-way traffic ahead; watch for head-on traffic.
- Steep Hill โ downgrade ahead; trucks use lower gear, all drivers check brakes.
- Slippery When Wet โ car with skid lines; reduce speed in rain or ice.
- Deer Crossing โ leaping deer silhouette; watch for animals entering the road.
School & Pedestrian Signs
- School Zone โ pentagon, yellow-green; obey posted speed limit; reduce speed and be prepared to stop. Georgia school-zone speed limits are posted on regulatory signs and apply during active student-presence hours.
- School Crossing โ pentagon with crossing figures; you are at the crossing.
- Pedestrian Crossing โ yellow diamond; watch for walkers crossing ahead.
- Shared Lane (Sharrow) โ pavement marking; bikes and cars share this lane.
Railroad Signs
- Round Yellow Warning โ railroad crossing AHEAD; slow down and prepare to stop.
- Crossbuck (X) โ you ARE at the crossing; treated like a yield sign.
- Crossbuck with Lights/Gates โ stop completely when lights flash or gate lowers.
Traffic Signals
- Steady Yellow โ light is about to turn red; prepare to stop if safe.
- Flashing Yellow โ proceed with caution; slow down and watch for cross traffic.
- Flashing Red โ treat as a stop sign; stop completely then proceed when safe.
- Green Arrow โ protected turn; oncoming traffic is stopped, you may turn.
- Red Arrow โ do not turn in the direction of the arrow; wait for green.
- Flashing Yellow Arrow โ permissive turn allowed; yield to oncoming traffic and pedestrians.
Guide & Service Signs
- Green Guide Signs โ highway directions, exit numbers, distances to cities.
- Route Marker โ shield shape identifies the highway number you are on.
- Hospital (H) โ blue square; emergency medical services ahead.
- Blue Service Signs โ gas, food, lodging, and other traveler services at upcoming exit.
- Brown Recreation Signs โ parks, camping, hiking, and points of interest.
Construction & Work Zone Signs
- Orange Diamond โ all orange signs mean construction or work zone ahead.
- Road Work Ahead โ slow down; drive cautiously. Georgia work-zone speed violations are a misdemeanor of a high and aggravated nature โ fine $100โ$2,000, up to 12 months jail, or both (Section 5, Highway Work Zones).
Common trap question: "What shape is a railroad crossing advance warning sign?" Answer: ROUND (circle). It's the only circular standard road sign.
